Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

Today I used the Watch Strava app to record my run. Almost everything worked. The watch app synched with the iPhone app and the iPhone app sync the strava website and I could see my run on the map and all my segments were there. Looking at the fitness app I see that my move ring reports the calories from the run and also the exercise minutes. What is missing is the actual workout does not show on the fitness app.

I know everyone seems to be getting different results but all is back to normal for me! Yesterday my run didn’t even upload at all. Fed up, finally decided to reset just my iPhone and restore from backup. I ran today and it uploaded AND the Map is there!!! Even historical maps are back!! For a while after the recent up date- no map, then the map came back with no data just the starting point, then nothing at all! So this was a fix for me!

I didn’t unpair my watch first as I forgot. I simply followed Rick’s process of

1) ensuring phone was backed up to cloud

2) downloaded 14.0 file on Mac and plugged phone in to reset it

3) when phone was back I restored from cloud backup

as part of this my watch was also restored as the apple logo appeared on it whilst it was on my wrist and the running track around the outside.

everything now works and maps show except for 2 days after the update and before the fix. Pity as one day was a 60mile ride but it’s not the end of the world

I also tried Strava and in my case the issue with Health crashing has prevented the Strava workout from being added to Fitness, just as it often (but not always) happens with the default Workout app. I had some luck with MapMyWalk earlier, but at this point it's just a coincidence that it managed to save before the healthd process stopped responding.

I also only have 5 hours recorded for Stand and only three tiny lines for Exercise, but at least the counter does report 12/12 hours and 25/30 minutes.

Honestly I don't even care about the past workout data, as long as Apple releases an update that sanitizes whatever's left in my health database and stops burning my phone's battery every time I do anything health related.

How this whole thing even passed QC is beyond me. I understand that there are commercial deadlines and whatnot, but this is not just happening to a few people who may have "mishandled" health data (not that you can do much of that on iOS anyway). Not to mention that, as others have pointed out, Apple prides itself in the Watch being the perfect fitness device.

I just bought a bike and was looking forward to using the Bike route option on Apple Maps. And! The Bike Route option is only available in 3 cities, of course not my city. But!!! It’s available for the ENTIRE MAINLAND CHINA!!!!! WTF!?!? Does Apple only consider its true customers to be people who live in San Francisco and China? Last I checked, the US has a fair amount (47 million) bikes.

Happy to report that restoring my iPhone and doing a fresh install of iOS 14 from my Mac has fixed the problems.

All missing workouts are back, route maps are back and missing stand data back.

If anyone’s interested I basically followed the same steps that some others have (similar to here: https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/)

  1. Backed up iPhone to iCloud (usual backup overnight whilst charging)
  2. Turn off Find My iPhone
  3. Connect iPhone to Mac and Option click Restore iPhone
  4. Select the iOS 14 IPSW file on Mac hard drive and let it do it’s thing (it didn’t take long)
  5. Once it’s installed the fresh iOS 14, your iPhone will display the usual “Hello” set up screen. Go through the steps and when prompted select the newest iCloud back up (which will take plenty of time depending on how much cr...stuff you have on your iPhone.

Note I didn’t unpair my Watch, didn’t need to and it paired up automatically once my iPhone was restored.

Hopefully this helps someone else.
