Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

What I did today: unpaired my Watch 4, paired the new Watch 6, restored this from Backup and did a run outside workout with 6km. In Health I don't see this workout, nor in the Fitness App. Really F**** O** ... In Health Data Sources I see the new watch 6 and Walking + Running Distance seems to be recorded there, too. But it is not synced to the Fitness App on my iPhone. Of course on the watch itself there was no map after the run, only the temperature.

So don't know how I get this data to my iPhone now.

I have similar problems. Maps don't appear in workout added to which mileage and exercise times shown correctly in activity are misreported in the Health App. Called Apple who are aware and suggested I unpair and re-pair which they claim fixes 90% of cases. Sadly I fell into the 10% where it didn’t work. I have just bought the S6 watch so feel very annoyed that something so obviously defective was released. Apple needs to remember its better to do a few things well rather than a lot of things badly. Perhaps less rush to put out a new product with more features like O2 sats that don’t work properly is not a good sales strategy. Am waiting to return my watch. Perhaps best to wait 6 months after a new product is launched and debugged or buy something less featured but medically accredited like the Withings smart watch.

There is now a work around for this. I think 99% of people don’t contact Apple.

quite easy

Make sure you have 14.1 and 7.1 installed respectively

unpair watch

back up watch to icloud

reset and erase phone

restore iPhone from last back up

pair watch

bingo. Well it worked for me

Dont have to do any of that downloading to MAC stuff. Don’t know where that one came from.

2nd line chap I spoke to said he had done this 6 times today and it worked every time. Good luck

I echo what ashbourn139 said.

Back up iphone, delete data and reset to factory settings (both watch and iphone), then restore from resent backup.

It worked for me...maps are back for activity done prior to iOS14 update.

However heart rate chart is unavailable for previous 'outdoor walk activities.'

Heart rate chart DOES does show up for strength training and elliptical workouts.

Would rather have my maps than the heart rate. Not that I have a choice.

Unpairing the watch automatically backs it up to your phone. It resets itself at this point. Just leave the watch alone - you don’t need to touch it

Back up your phone to the iCloud. It backs your watch up as well - trust me!

Erase your phone once backed up and let it go through the process

Once done simply restore from the back up you have just done

then back on to the watch app on your phone and pair your watch again. It will be exactly as it was when you left it

Activityapp once restored seems to show all the workout data

This is yet another significant bug in iOS 14. I did a factory reset on my watch & re-paired.

It doesn’t matter if my phone is with me or not: since upgrading to iOS 14 my workputs are no longer being mapped.

[The other significant iOS 14 bug is if you use email aliases: you choose an email address in the From field but unbeknown to you Mail actually sends it from one of your other email addresses. You don’t know this unless you check your sent folder or receive a reply to your email.]

Nothing in 7.1 beta 2 either, apparently. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/watchos-release-notes/watchos-7_1-beta-release-notes

It's possible that these updates were already "planned" (unlocking SpO2 sensor in AW6, merging watch faces) so the map stuff will either come in the next beta, or directly in a 14.0.2 patch, like they did last week. I hope so, anyway. I doubt they'll leave this hanging, it's affecting too many people and questions about this are already being raised in the comments on many sites reporting about the betas. I guess all we can do is wait. :(

I had not set up the new sleep app. I currently use AutoSleep, and have been very happy with it. I saw that Apple did not have near the functionality as AutoSleep. I am so glad after hearing this I did not set up. I have not lost any map data, but had to set up watch anew for it to start working after I upgraded. These fixes are all so confusing, just hope Apple can fix for everyone with an upgrade.

I've been following this thread and a couple others since day one and was waiting for an official statement from Apple. I did the Apple suggested fix (backup, unpair, backup iphone, erase, restore,) All old GPS maps are now visible with the map icon and a green start point, but no route (and the start point is in the vicinity of the start.)

I went for a bile ride and happy to report that my map data appeared and was also able to import to Strava with the map data for the first time since the upgrade.

Lucky for me I have always imported my workouts to Strava so I do have my map data available there. I like their segment features.

Yes, me too... only the official advice ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211865 ) enabled NEW maps to be recorded in NEW workouts . All my old workouts gone. Apple, at least apologise. The "how to prevent future loss of data" rider, is an insult. Especially since this obviously was an issue in the beta.

Ps

I have two 11 series iPhones, Xs Max and ProMax , one back up , the other full time; plus a series 5 watch. Reset/restore process started 10:30. Finished, 19:00.
