Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

I have also had a further look and I only have maps since the 25th Sept (think thats the day I did the rename watch thing).

No other routes showing let alone maps. In the show all routes sources and access only my current watch shows, but under the actual data source and acsess all my watches show.

So the actual workouts I did are all there but no routes for that data because those devices are not in the list of devices allowed to provide routes.

I love Apple and it shows that the only time they’re in the headlines is when things go wrong as we are used to everything just working. Ok they’ve ballesed up with this update but people seem to forget the millions of reasons they bought an iPhone and Apple Watch in the first place and using this one mistake to possibly move to Android! Good luck getting an alternative smart watch that is as comfortable when exercising.

Personally I am sure apple will have learnt their lessons and future upgrades will test for whatever caused this issue so I would never leave over this. From memory I can’t think of the last time Apple let me down - very few companies are that good.

I’m confused about the segments problem raised - if one uses Strava doesn’t that mean the segments are still in tact on their or has this issue wiped your Strava data too?

Firstly I am totally committed to Apple. I love their products. However this defect is very annoying. Like other people I bought an Apple Watch specifically for fitness and health tracking. I don’t want to use a third party app - it was working just fine until the upgrade.

To me, this would be just as bad as post upgrade forgetting to make sure Apple Pay worked. These are the two main things I do in my watch.

i dont think Apple will “learn their lesson” it’s not exactly the first time an iOS upgrade has caused issues (upgrades that have bricked the phone, inaccurate maps, exchange active sync etc...).

I get that software has issues. But this looks more like a complete omission than a bug.

maybe because of Covid and lock down the QA team did all their testing at home in their best rooms and never noticed that their location was static?!

as an aside, I dont like the new activity summary layout either I preferred being able to see my recent monthly summaries in a single screen.

Unfortunately no. The map is what enables me to compare one run to another. I have about 10 different runs that I go on and with map info, they can be easily compared. Without it, there is no way to find similar runs other than trying to match up total duration but as some of the runs are of similar length, this is not really a solution either.

I was able to pull the workout data into the RunGap app and easily group/sort runs by duration, speed, etc. Since upgrading to iOS14 there is no map on any run (other than the start pin) so it's no longer possible to compare runs, and all historic runs have lost their maps too.

I backup to a Mac rather than iCloud, and I have a substantial music library imported from CDs, so the tech note from Apple advising to wipe the watch, backup the iPhone to iCloud and then wipe the phone will (as far as I understand) result in me losing all of my music library in addition to taking a long time to do (re setup everything).

I was hoping that Apple would have at least acknowledged the problem and that they were working on a fix but this is not the case, so I assume that my only recourse now is to wipe both devices and start over from scratch as fresh installs. I dread having to do this as I have multiple email accounts for work all with 2FA requirements etc. It's a big job to start over.

I really wish I had never updated my iPhone. Hard lesson learned.

Same here about VO2 Max, however my heart rate is recorded as expected. I read in another thread here that someone got VO2 Max back by following this procedure:

  1. Manually add a VO2 Max data point in Apple Health
  2. Reset fitness calibration on the Watch
  3. Recalibrate the watch with a 20-minute outdoor walk
  4. Take one or two 20-minute outdoor walks or runs; apparently the first one after calibration is only used internally for further calibration of VO2 Max or something like that.

I’m currently between steps 3 and 4 — not going out in the middle of the night in an area infested with wild boars. :-) But will report tomorrow, weather permitting.

I have the opposite problem, all workout maps prior to IOS14 have been lost, maps post IOS14 just have the start point hi-lighted but no route but all 3rd party apps, eg Strava, Steps, Pacer record and plot my workout route successfully. I did notice that after updating to Watch 7.0.2 the weather is now getting saved next to the workout map.

I agree with you regarding apple fixing this bug ASAP.

BTW I have an Apple Watch Series 3 and a iPhone 8.

I also have this problem.

I go for a daily outdoor walk and the info always used to show up in Activities of iOS13, including the map of the route I had taken. This using an Apple Watch Series 5 and watchOS 6.

Now with iOS 14 and watchOS 7, sometimes the entire workout is not shown in Fitness. And when it does show up then the map of the route is never there - only a single point indicating the starting location.

I've unpaired and re-paired the watch to the phone. I've updated to iOS 14.1 and watchOS 7.0.2 - the problem remains.

Note since the unpair/re-pair didn't work, I definitely recommend to not do this. While _most_ of the data is restored, my watch was not 100% the same as before. A few apps were missing, Breath setting were different and the activity rings progress on the day of the update itself was "confused": at that point in the day, I had 8 stand hours, but after the re-pair, additional stand hours were not added the tally. So if you have some streak you are proud of, definitely meet your daily goal before trying this, or risk losing your progress on that day.

So after a month of having no maps for workouts and twice trying the recommendation to un-pair and re-pair my watch with no success, I finally "bit the bullet" today and went with the nuclear option, i.e. erase all settings and content on my iPhone and restore from an iCloud backup.

I wasn't using iCloud backup until recently as I was happily backing up to my Macbook which ensured that all music imported from my CD collection was backed up. I turned on iCloud backup a week ago in preparation for this attempt to get maps working again.

I have an iPhone XR running iOS 14.1 and a watch series 3 running watchOS 7.0.3. I forgot that I was supposed to un-pair my watch before doing this but it seems that this did not matter.

I just went into settings on my iPhone -> General -> Reset -> Erase all content and settings. After this had finished and the iPhone restarted, I went through the initial setup (connect to network, set up FaceID again etc) and was then able to restore a backup from iCloud. During the restore, I noticed that my watch had reset itself and seemed to be setting itself back up as it was displaying the progress ring.

The result is that it has fixed the problem on my iPhone - maps are now working again. The first thing I noticed is that workouts for the past week all now have maps whereas prior to the reset they did not. Workouts prior to October 16 still have no maps. I just went on a short walk to see if new workouts are recorded correctly and it worked - the map was there.

The Fitness app shows that workout data is still being restored from the cloud (more than an hour after the restore finished) so I don't yet know if activities prior to iOS14 being installed will get maps back or not.

As I suspected, all of the music that I have put onto my iPhone from my CD collection is completely gone. All music purchased from iTunes has been restored. I will try to selectively restore my CD music from a backup on my Macbook but doubt this will be possible. This is a real let down as I listen to my collection when I am driving.

Apple have released instructions on how to fix it so not sure why people are expecting them to release something else. Imagine the upgrade was like a car - the vast majority are fine but some people have issues based on how they use it. Manufacturers can only do so much but sometimes you may need a new engine.

Personally I think apple are consistently great and I’m sure this issue will never happen again. Their fix worked and for those it doesn’t you need to pick up with them. For those who don’t want to restore, then you’ll have to live with it.

Oct 27, 2020 4:06 AM in response to Wicked666

Yes, instructions that work for some but not for all. It’s not just the time it takes to wipe/restore, for many there is the added inconvenience and time needed to restore Apple Pay with their banks.

I don’t share your view that Apple learn from their mistakes, it’s become a trend across most of their products to issue buggy software and let consumers act as guinea pigs! This is not the way a quality company should operate. Each of us that buy Apple products pay a premium for them based on “superior” usability, seamless operation thanks to the tight integration of software/ hardware. This is now no longer the case and I suspect there are a lot of customers like me who find their 30 years of loyalty now stretched to the point where an Apple product is now not necessarily their first choice. I returned my Watch 6 after a few days because many of the claims made by Apple we’re just not true. Of course, they may or may not get fixed in future software releases but the point is, if you pay a premium then the kit should work as advertised out of the box. Apple have got away with this for far too long.

I am waiting for 14.2 also for wife’s iphone 8 plus and series 4 watch to update. Hoping it will not have issues. My 8 plus and series 5 had battery drain and maps issue with just starting pin showing. I did not lose any maps or data. The reseting of watch solved my battery issue and maps started working again, did that a few weeks ago. I did not want to do any update on my wife’s phone due to my issues. She is still on IOS 13. Hoping Apple finally has it fixed in 14.2. I think with this release of multiple iphones and dates, the fixing of issues must be delayed. I am guessing 14.2 will be released with iphone 12 pro max and mini, which means hopefully we see that update next week???? Who really knows though.

Nov 12, 2020 11:49 PM in response to GHT001

Some people might be satisfied with the solution offered by 14.2, but not me.

I trusted Apple with my activity data which had charted memorable walks and bike rides going back over four years, all now not available.

Might not be an issue for a lot of users, but for me it's devastating.

Imagine Apple suddenly lost your email history, but it's okay because it works again for new mails.
