Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

Asking the same question as I did to another user: did you restore from a backup? And if so, which one? (One before the first update to iOS 14, the most recent one in iCloud, one you just did before doing the restore, etc....)

I think this may be handy to anyone wanting to go — ahem — that route. (Couldn't help myself with that pun. :-D)

I already give feedback to Apple and also had a support guy looking into it : for now no solution....

iPhoneX and Watch 4 Nike GPS + Cellular.

I already did : unpair of watch, restore from backup, setup as new watch...same procedures together with an iPhone Restore through Finder as well as downloaded the images.

Every try makes it more worse.....

Unpairing watch and restoring iPhone : there I already have no maps at all in the Fitness app.

After pairing the watch it is not syning workouts to the iPhone any longer, or heart rates are completely missing. In every case there is no map.

So only thing here is : HOPE, Apple will fix it soon and will bring back all the lost maps etc...

Do nit want to loose hundreds of workouts from the last four years ....

Same issue, I've got an iPhone 8 paired with an Apple Watch Series 3, all previous workout Maps now gone and workouts since the "upgrade" just showing a start point. VERY disappointing from a company that can't do regression testing on a major upgrade and allow this to happen. Been in IT since 1979 and lack of testing of new software releases is unfortunately par for the course now in this industry.

Hi, I having couple type of workouts via Apple fitness. I noticed that Outdoor running do missing the maps,

other like functional fitness map exist although I have no moving. Also indoor cycling has map too.

I am wondering just some of the fitness activities were missing the map setting rather all of them. Nobody issue, I guess is Apple technical problem.

I did the whole process and situation is the same:

  • no maps for the routes previous to IOS-14 upgrade
  • outdoor walking workouts maps after IOS-14 to this morning show just the starting point
  • 2 more hours wasted reinstalling everything today, plus another reinstallation a few days ago, plus more time trying to identify what's happening
  • RunKeeper route maps (before and after IOS14/AW7) continue working without issues
  • Bye bye Activities/Workout/Fitness apps, 100% back to a trustable app

  • Yes, after the whole unpair-backup-erase-restore-pair none of the pre-IOS14 maps were shown at all, the maps with routes for the workouts between installation of IOS-14 and installation of AW-7 (days later) were shown OK, and for the ones after installation of AW-7 up to this morning , just the map and the green dot (starting point).
  • 40-45 minutes later I sat that the routes for pre-IOS14 were there (great!)
  • 4-5 hours later I went for an specific map (Sep 8th) and now it was just a map with a green dot.... then I checked the rest and all of them are maps with a green dot...

Something is really wrong with the cache of these maps in the app, but the bright side is that the maps seem to be there but very well hidden...

Hi,

I’ve followed Apple procedure and it worked. I consider myself lucky compared with the users reporting that it didn’t changed anything. In my case, everything is back to normal. All the data is back, including the maps of the old workouts. I just had an issue with Strava and its importing workouts option from Health to Strava but it got fixed after I uninstall/reinstall Stava app.

I hope Apple will release a fix for those who are still experiencing the issue because I know how frustrating is the situation.
