Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

iPhone XR and watch S3.

I’ve lost my maps on all old workout and on new workouts just see the start pin, but everything else seems to be working fine.

I tried unpairing my watch and repairing it, setting it up as a new watch but nothing changed. Last night I tried unpairing and repairing but this time restoring the backup onto the watch. Still just showing maps with a start pin but now the weather was is displayed for the workout, which didn’t happen before.

Very strange. I am not planning to wipe my phone per Apple’s suggestion. Aside from not having the time, it suggests that you should do it if you have two or more of the issues listed. I only have one - missing maps.

I finally had a chance to reset and erase my phone. Re-set up from iCloud backup.

Most of my historical stats are now looking good (stands, steps etc).

routes since 25th sept now showing on phone, old ones not.

show all workout routes only has the one watch showing (current name of W5), but my W3 and old W5 name doesn’t show as a route supplier, but they all show as step and distance supplier.

Having the same issue. i Have in iPhone 6S and Watch 3; Prior to upgrading to ios 14 I never had any issues.

Now whenever I complete a Walk (well a wheelchair push because i'm in a wheelchair) I now get no heart rate data (Chart Unavailable) in Activity (the data is in Health though), and No map (just a pin at the start destination). I also get priodic watch crashes when I raise my watch and it just turns off for a few minutes and restart.

Other threads seem to indicate repairing the watch may work - I've tried that and it didn't. Also to do a backup and full restore on the iPhone. I've tried that but the iTunes backup takes 16+ hours then fails. I am so annoyed over this dreadful upgrade

I have this issue as well. iPhone 11 Pro and Apple Watch 4.

14.1 did not solve the problem, so I followed Apple's hugely time-consuming reset procedure.

Now the old workouts appear to be back, but the maps show only a single point. Really disappointing to have wasted time on the reset for it not to work. I haven't tested new workouts yet; perhaps the problem is fixed going forward.

Bottom line: I understand issues happen, but Apple should clearly explain what "success" will look like before advising people to go through such a lengthy "fix" procedure.

I disagree. Apple broke a working product and have an obligation to fix it.

I couldn’t wait any longer so took the nuclear option, and while it is working properly now, I have lost a few years of health data, my move streak of 212 days was cut down to 25 days, and I am missing a whole month of maps so I can’t compare all my workouts.

So it’s not a very good fix. Apple stuffed up big time and are responsible for data loss, feature loss, and have wasted countless hours of user’s valuable time. With no acknowledgement or apology.

Totally understand your feelings. I had similar feelings, but they softened when maps starting working again after doing the nuclear option. I didn’t lose any other data (move streak intact, etc). However, I still really want my old maps back.

if the next update restores all of your old data, would you stay with the Apple hardware? Or are you done no matter what? (I don’t work for Apple or anything, just curious!)
