Safari 14.0 Top Sites no longer an option?

Just updated Safari to 14.0 and can no longer set Open to Top Sites in Preferences ... well, can no longer find any trace of Top Sites.

Just me, or is this an intended change that just leaves me wishing that I had skipped the update?

you can "pin sites" so they show up like this:

you do this by the following link:

Pin frequently visited websites in Safari on Mac

you can also "add bookmark " to "favourites":

and they will show up on the start page like this:

have fun

You can mimic the Top Sites display by adding the sites you want to show as Bookmarks, go into your Bookmarks Sidebar, drag those sites up to the top of the list. They will then appear near the top of your Start page in the Bookmarks section ... but not in the large, easy to see format of the Top Sites page - but at least shown as a convenient group.

Top sites is not returned, but you can still use the tab overview button, which is almost like Top Sites. The frustrating thing is that Apple does not give an option to just have Tab Overview as the start page. I made tabs for a bunch of sites I had on Top Sites, and they show up on Tab Overview (The toolbar icon with the 2 offset squares) just like Top Sites did. It would not take much of an effort from Apple to make this work.

steve is rolling over in his grave. this is such thoughtless douchebaggery.

in the meantime, go to home --> library --> safari, where you will hopefully find TopSites.plist to at least recover your urls... at which point you can set up a new folder of bookmarks or favorites. users who do not have their libraries visible by default will need to hold the option while clicking on the finder's GO menu...

what a fail. 🤦‍♂️

Incredible! I should have checked before updating.

Sorry but I will no longer use Safari.

Vivaldi offers a very good browser that has a "Speed Dial" which is just the same as the old Top Sites. I'm going over to Vivaldi.

I'd have been less furious had the new start page imported ALL my old Top Sites. If it had at least created a folder with them in I might have just shrugged my shoulders, but just to make them disappear totally? Shocking. I didn't have them bookmarked as I had them on my Homepage. That was the point of it.

Let me repeat. Vivaldi.

Great browser with fully functioning "Top Sites" feature as an option, on the homepage. It's called Speed dial.

Funny, I have that many favorite and most visited sites on my Safari Start Page. Why don’t you? You do know you can control what appears on the Start Page, don’t you? They’re called preferences and they can be accessed by right-clicking/control-clicking any where in the Start Page screen.

But, whatever floats your boat.

Open finder, on the top bar click on 'Go' then 'Go to Folder', a window opens and make sure in the filed there you have only this entered "~/Library/Safari" hit Go. Then scroll in the folder that opens to locate the file called "TopSites.plist" right click on it and select 'open with' then 'other' select to open with TextEdit. in this file you will find the URLs of your Top sites.

All this hints and workarounds are not helpful. The top sites were pretty much perfect.

What Apple made is a mere catastrophe. This new start page tries to be a bit of everything but in fact none of it is very good.

  • My favorites I don't need there since I have them beneath the address bar. It's pretty handy there and it contains my whole hierarchical bookmark collection. So the favorites are not a replacement for the top sites.
  • The recent viewed sites do nothing good to me or to my family. Since we are all using Safari one cannot tell what recent site will sho up tomorrow. We had a perfect collection of top sites from where we started browsing. The top sites were kind of a stability thin, the recent viewed pages messes all up.
  • Why would I need the iCloud tabs? I have the browsing history when I am searching sometimes for viewed places. In 99% of the time I am not searching my viewed places but just normally using google or starpage.com to finde the things I need. The iCloud tabs are completely useless.
  • All the other things are way too down below to be useful.

Apple: If you like your new start page the please keep it. But do not take me away the top sites! They were as I said before perfect. Why are you doing this? Why are you taking me away things I find to be perfect?
