The first night I slept with my watch, the lock screen dimmed. Now when I set sleep mode or at bedtime in my sleep schedule, my watch says it’s in sleep mode but it doesn’t dim. Is there a setting to change this?
I have rebooted, reset, unpaired/paired and tried a different watch set up as new.

Do you have the Wind Down time set? If not, try setting it and see if the screen dims as it should when sleep mode turns on.

Sleep mode is now working on my watch.
watchOS 7.0.2 didn’t fix it
Updated to iOS 14.2 Public Beta 3 today and sleep mode is now working. It entered sleep mode according to my schedule, the display locks and dims.
Updated to iOS 14.2, watch stayed on 7.0.3 and sleep mode and sleep watch face finally works!

Updated to iOS 14.2 and WatchOS 7.1 right now and it works, finally!! 😊
Update to 7.0.1 on Watch and iPhone made no difference for me either.
Should we try to find a common denominator? It seems like this is a pretty uncommon bug, which makes me think that it could be caused by an uncommon setting. Can you think of any setting on your device that matches this description?

Same Problem, on Apple Watch 5 and Apple Watch 3. Even on Watch OS 7.02, Problem still there.
Maybe there exist an interaction between other apps, which is responsible for this problem...!?
At the very first, my Apple Watch 3 shows everything fine.. the next day, the problem was the same as with my series 5.

I can add that I have tried to unpair, erase, and set up as new (not from backup) my Apple Watch. It did not help.
I have an ongoing case with Apple support, and they have collected logs from my watch in order to investigate the issue.
Well on a paired iPhone I have no management profiles on my phone, no vpn, standard passcode on lock screen, 2 keyboards and 2 languages, all wireless connections always on, LTE always on. Looks and works as regular ways as possible, and still this kind of bug occurs.
Thanks! This post is in reference to sleep mode and not the always on feature. I have Apple Watch Series 5 and the always on feature is working.
I have the Wind Down Time and sleep schedule set. At the designated time the watch does not dim and lock as it is supposed to. It does the same thing if I manually enable sleep mode.
Same problem with my Watch Series 5. Support could not help - they are now evaluating.
