iOS 14 iPhone update - camera not working.

Hi all,

I have an iPhone 7 (model number: MN922X/A) and I recently updated the software to version 14 (iOS 14) and now my camera doesn’t work.

I have done some obvious troubleshooting steps of restarting my iPhone, and switching between camera modes and applications. The front and rear cameras are both black.

Anyone have any idea on how I can go about fixing this issue? looking forward to reading any thoughts you might have :)

Please note, I had not performed a backup of my iPhone before proceeding with the update.

Why re-print lies? Apple did work on the topic of this ancient thread and fixed it last quarter.

If you genuinely think 14.4 rather than 14.0 is still causing this and you want it to be considered in 14.5.x or 15

  1. Start a new thread specifically referencing 14.4
  2. Put in a fresh bug report for 14.4

Product Feedback - Apple

Nobody of any significance ( I including myself) will ever read this thread again and offer advice. Neither experts, nor Apple. It's too old.

Chat amongst yourselves by all means if it make you feel good but nothing will happen as a result.

Apple please fix this for your customers. There is no way that forcing us to pay for repairs on something you broke or forcing us into buying a new phone should be the answer. I have been a loyal Apple customer for decades with a large family- all of whom have multiple Apple devices. Is this the thanks I get for being a loyal customer? I can’t work as a Shipt or Instacart shopper without my camera and scanner working. I am literally losing money with each passing day that this isn’t fixed.

I’ve got the exact same problem and my flashlight and microphone aren’t working to the point where I can’t hear anyone nor can they hear me when trying to take a phone call. I can’t even go in to any repair stores either due to the whole lockdown situation here in Melbourne. 😩😩 my phone has served me well in the last 4 years that I’ve had it that I don’t want to buy a new phone. They’re just way too expensive!

Welcome to our world. iPhone 8? Front camera and flashlight quit working somewhere in 13.x.x except for about 15 seconds after a hard reset. Now with 14, I lost the selfie camera. I’ve been complaining for at least 3 months. Crickets.

at least the phone works.

If they can’t fix this I’m headed to Samsung as I’ve been looking to upgrade this 5 year old device.

william I’m not sure why you keep responding to my posts but please stop. I have been in touch with support multiple times with no acceptable response or timeline for resolution. I know that we are USERS here. But Apple should be monitoring these posts as well. But please don’t respond to my posts anymore. You aren’t helpful just being rude.

You said:

Well, as explained, they do NOT.

So, why do you post this:

Apple please fix this for your customers.

Reminding you that this is not the way to get Apple's attention is not rude. And, unfortunately, these are worldwide forums and you cannot dictate who may or may not respond to any posts. If you do not feel that it was helpful, simply ignore it.

No they said I would have to buy a new phone if it was not the camera - so messed up. Luckily it did fix the issue, I wish I waited for the next update but was never told that would be an option. They said it’s only free to fix if apple issues it as a known problem, seems like 14.01 shows it is a known problem to me!

Apple support on the phone redirects me to a premium reseller to have the phone physically checked. And it turns out there is problem with the board so here it is why the cameras are ok now with the update but the mic isn't ... Physical problem and out of warranty, no alternative other than buying a new iPhone - can it be a coincidence?

It's not just the old phones that it is happening to. I have the XS Max and just updated my software on the 22nd and the same thing happened to me. My phone is literally 3 months out of warranty and talking with Apple they basically told me that I am out of luck and I will have to buy a new phone or pay to have this one repaired

It seems this issue is not unique to iphone7. I'm also having issues on my iphone X. The rear camera stops working, but front camera is ok. If I quite Camera app and restart it is still black, but sliding thru video, slo-mo, pano in some of them the camera works. front camera is operational but switching back and forth does not solve rear camera.

usually if I power-off and turn-on again the rear camera is back (in my opinion making clear is a software issue) but not sure what makes it goes black again after some shots. Curious is that when Camera app make it goes black, if I try a picture using Whatsapp camera icon...no issues at all. Apple needs a bug fix for ios. I'm running on 14.0.1 (latest available by Sep 29)

iPhone 8 had a variety of issues after iOS 14.01 update. Reached out to Apple and described symptoms. Black camera screen upon opening. No flashlight. Amazon shopping app froze then went to background. FaceTime wouldn’t open. Other apps opened yet wouldn’t work fully.

tech said it sounds like the iOS update didn’t work and to try again using iTunes on another pc etc. I couldn’t get the phone to backup either.

It took several attempts but restored and all works again. First mistake was to connect via a usb hub. Connect directly to the pc. There was also a critical step left out to get the phone to go into restore mode. Instructions stated to press volume up then volume down the right button on start up. Found that the thumb button has to be held down as well to get the phone into restore mode.

After several attempts it’s all working well now.

Frustrating indeed. I have discovered a couple of instant workarounds.

As noted, my camera launches but there is no response when clicking the capture “button”. I have also noticed the screen “flashing” randomly as if it is taking an image but that’s all, no snap.

2 things I have found that seem to be consistent in working. First, when I launch the camera app, if I slide to “portrait” before anything else I am able to use the camera as expected, though in portrait mode. I then found out that when the camera is glitching and refusing to snap when the capture button clicked, if I just sustain the click (“hold down” the shutter button) I can capture the image as expected, just delayed.

I look forward to the update that fixes this annoying issue and hopefully my hacks can help someone.
