Backing up/syncing iphone with ios 14 on itunes 12.10.9.3

Have those of you who have installed ios 14 been able to successfully back up/sync iphone with the new itunes version (12.10.9.3) for Windows that was released yesterday? If not, what problems/errors are you having? I just want to make sure the new itunes version recognizes and is compatible with ios 14 before I install it on my phone.

Ryan -

Per my post from Sept 23, this is what seems to work for iTunes 12.10.9.3 and iOS 14.

After spending some time with Apple second level support this morning, I have the resolution to this issue. The new version of iTunes fails in this way when working with previously encrypted iPhone backups. If you uncheck the Encrypt iPhone Backup box to remove the encryption, the un-encrypted backup will restore the proper sync and backup operation. Once it does a successful backup and sync, you can then re-encrypt the backup and everything will continue to work properly.

The only other thing that I might recommend is to delete your existing backup by following these instructions:

    1. In Windows 10, click the Search bar next to the Start button.
    2. In the Search bar, enter %appdata% or %USERPROFILE% (if you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store).
    3. Press Return.
    4. Double-click these folders: "Apple" or "Apple Computer" > MobileSync > Backup.
    5. Delete the folder containing the backup band folders.

Now sync your iPhone for the "first" time, and make sure that you select "This Computer" under "Automatically Backup" in the "Backup" section of the iPhone Summary page. It seems that iTunes now defaults to iCloud as the backup location, which you now have to change each time you wish to sync or back up if you want to use your PC as the location.

Howard

I never had issue with back-up or syncing but I had to open iTunes separately after connecting an iphone or ipad to my Windows PC via USB after updating both itunes and iOS. Prior to updates iTunes would automatically open when an Apple device was connected via USB. Does your iTunes automatically open when you plug your iphone into your computer?

You can try these suggestions to get it to work, or at least get some additional insights into what's going on or to review with Apple Support.

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the Summary page in iTunes for your connected iPhone, and see whether the "Sync only checked songs and videos" and "Manually manage music and videos" boxes are unchecked. Uncheck all the option boxes.
  2. Go to the Music settings in iTunes and make sure that the Sync Music box and Entire Music Library radio button are checked.
  3. See whether everything syncs now.

Everything that syncs from your computer's iTunes library should be visible on your iPhone, but the UI on Music has changed significantly over the last couple of updates. To confirm that everything is on your iPhone, the first thing to do is to check the settings for the Music app and confirm that the Downloaded Music storage size matches what you see in your iTunes library by mousing over the Audio portion of the color storage bar at the bottom of the iTunes summary page for your iPhone. If these match, then everything is synced. If these don't match, time to call Apple Support to share what you've found.

To confirm everything is present, or to identify what's missing, you can try viewing your iPhone library either by songs, albums, or artists to see if you can identify what's missing when compared to your PC library.

Thanks for the feedback.....have you tried opening up itunes preferences, then clicking into devices to see if the box got checked that prevents ipods, iphones, and ipads from syncing automatically? Or when your phone is connected and itunes is opened, on the summary page, under options, is the box no longer checked to "automatically sync when this iphone is connected"?

I did both the iOS 14 and iTunes 12.10.9.3 updates, and am now unable to complete a backup/sync through either USB cables or WiFi. With either connection, I hit sync, and the iTunes display shows waiting for sync to start, the backup process runs and appears to complete, preparing diagnostic info (2/5), sync begins, and after a few seconds I get the "iTunes could not backup the iPhone "Name" because the iPhone disconnected" error and the backup that appeared to complete in the display is not reflected in the Latest Backup date and time. Yet the iPhone is still connected and can be accessed whether through USB or WiFi.

I tried doing the Windows 10 Control Panel/Programs and Features/Repair for the iTunes app, but no change. How can I get my backup and sync operating correctly again?

I have updated my 3 Windows 10 PC's with itunes 12.10.9.3 and now have the same sync problem as has been described in this thread on all three. I can backup and sync with itunes if I open itunes directly but if I connect my iphone X in two of the PC's or iphone 7Plus in the third one via usb, itunes will not recognize my iphone's. I have spent all day working on this including uninstalling/reinstalling and ensuring all appropriate check boxes are checked. I have made sure the autoplay for the iphone is set correctly and made sure the itunes helper is included in startup.

At this point, I do not know what else to try as all three PC's have the same problem and they were all working fine prior to this update
