Backing up/syncing iphone with ios 14 on itunes 12.10.9.3

Have those of you who have installed ios 14 been able to successfully back up/sync iphone with the new itunes version (12.10.9.3) for Windows that was released yesterday? If not, what problems/errors are you having? I just want to make sure the new itunes version recognizes and is compatible with ios 14 before I install it on my phone.

Ryan -

Per my post from Sept 23, this is what seems to work for iTunes 12.10.9.3 and iOS 14.

After spending some time with Apple second level support this morning, I have the resolution to this issue. The new version of iTunes fails in this way when working with previously encrypted iPhone backups. If you uncheck the Encrypt iPhone Backup box to remove the encryption, the un-encrypted backup will restore the proper sync and backup operation. Once it does a successful backup and sync, you can then re-encrypt the backup and everything will continue to work properly.

The only other thing that I might recommend is to delete your existing backup by following these instructions:

    1. In Windows 10, click the Search bar next to the Start button.
    2. In the Search bar, enter %appdata% or %USERPROFILE% (if you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store).
    3. Press Return.
    4. Double-click these folders: "Apple" or "Apple Computer" > MobileSync > Backup.
    5. Delete the folder containing the backup band folders.

Now sync your iPhone for the "first" time, and make sure that you select "This Computer" under "Automatically Backup" in the "Backup" section of the iPhone Summary page. It seems that iTunes now defaults to iCloud as the backup location, which you now have to change each time you wish to sync or back up if you want to use your PC as the location.

Howard

Just updated my iPhone 8Plus, iPad (gen6) and iMac. Now neither my phone nor my iPad will connect / sync with my iMac. For both the iMac tells me it cannot connect because it must install an update on the phone / iPad. When I click Update, it says it failed because the software is not available on the server. I guess I just got hosed by Apple again. Maybe someday I'll learn

just upgraded from iphone x on ios13 to iphone 12pro on ios14.1 Itunes 12.10.10.2 on windows 10 desktop.

I plug in my iphone and selected sync entire music library.

I got message that doing that would replace synch from old laptop library.

I confirmed and ok, then "Apply".

Itunes synch status displays for a couple of seconds, and then disappears, and the phone is not displayed in iTunes anymore.

meanwhile, on my iphone, if I click any songs, I get a message "This song is not currently available in your country or region"

To say that I am regretting upgrading my iphone, would be a gross understatement.

The first operation during a sync is to do a backup. If you did that first sync to your computer, then why did you then do a backup?

If you go to the bottom of the iPhone Summary page in iTunes and look at the bottom right of the Backups section, it should have the time and date of your last backup to either this computer and/or iCloud. As I noted above, you need to select this computer every time you sync or back up if that's where you want it to be.

Did you check encrypt local backup prior to the new backup? Try syncing to the PC rather than doing a backup and see if that works. Other than that, I don't have any additional suggestions. I hope you get it resolved!

My situation is the same as Ryan's - when I connect my phone and start iTunes the backup fails but the sync continues and works fine. I had a previous backup from an old version of iTunes dated from September in my MobileSync folder - I tried moving that and syncing again, but that didn't make any difference. I've never had the encrypt option selected.

If the backup under the AppData directory is empty, then you will find it in %UserProfile%/Apple/MobileSync/Backup. You might try moving the current backup to a new location so iTunes creates a new backup, and see whether that resolves the issue. If it does, then simply discard the relocated backup file. If it doesn't, time for a call to Apple second level support.

I am also having problems backing up my iPhone since installing iOS 14 and iTunes 12.10.9.3 (Windows PC). The backup runs and completes with no error message, and then continues with the remaining steps, but iTunes is saying my iPhone has never been backed up. I have backups from previous versions of iOS and iTunes which appear to have also disappeared.

Hello, I tried unticking the encryption box last night and a box popped up and seemed to be backing up my iPhone with a progress bar...

only for it to fail and bring up the "iPhone could not be backed up because an error occurred" message once again. The same thing happened when re-ticking the encryption box.

Am I going wrong? I'm expecting a call from Support tomorrow (5th Nov 2020) but I fear they will be no help.

Interesting, but that reminded me that an Apple support person suggested that, too. He also asked if I was using an Apple or aftermarket cable.

For me, I switched from my Apple USB-C to my Apple USB-A cable and it didn’t make any difference. It was the encryption issue.

Standard cables should be interchangeable, but it can’t hurt to try if nothing else works.

I am still getting "ITunes could not back up the iPad because an error occurred." This problem seems to have started after upgrading to iOS 14. I'm using: Windows 10, iTunes Version 12.11.0.26. iPad with iOS 14.2.

I have tried:

  • Closing all apps and restarting the iPad & PC.
  • Removing my passcode.
  • Unchecking the option to "Encrypt local backup".
  • "AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync" is empty, although iTunes still says: "Latest Backup: 10/4/2020 to this computer.

I noticed that backups to iCloud initiated on the iPad are also failing: "The last backup could not be completed."

I am having the same problem of doing a backup. I have religiously backup all my iPhones and iPads every week! Since I upgraded iTunes, iPhones and iPads to newest version's I keep getting the same response on all my equipment "this phone/iPad has never been backed up on this computer" no error messages everything is cycling thought and then I get the message! It has something to do with one of the updates! The iPhone and iPad I have had over a year and has backed up with no problem till the upgrade. The other iPhone is the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
