iPhone XS doesn't charge after update to iOS 14.

My iPhone XS doesn't charge after update to iOS 14.

After the update to iOS 14, I checked some functions and went to sleep. In the morning I took my phone from the shelf and checked WhatsUp. After few seconds the display gets black. I was not able to switch it on. Now , I can only see the battery symbol with a thin red line in it with a cable on the display. If I put the charge cable in the phone, the phone recognizes it (the cable on the display disappears), but nothing is happening. The phone doesn't charge any more.

Please help me. I have no warranty anymore.

Hi. I had exactly the same problem with my iPhone 8 and some minutes after installing ios14 i found the iphone is charging (by showing the sign) but it was not charging actually. Then as i disconnecte the charger, the battery level went down and down an finnaly phone was turned off.

before I lose the whole battery , I tried to ask SIRI that what is the problem by saying this sentence''Hi Siri, My Phone is not charging" and Siri replied me" The current Volume is 81%" although I had only 6% battery level actually.

At that time I guessed that this is some Bug by iphone Screen that can not show the battery level because SIRI told me I have 81% battery. But after some minutes that the level touched 1% my phone went off.

in My country there is no App Store. and i need my phone a lot.So I went to a repair shop and the guy open it up and found that after ios 14 update battery doest accept any electrical flow and COULD NOT BE CHARGED also when he put my battery to other iPhone 8. So he has changed my battery and everything is now working. I have paid a lot for this issue and I hope Apple can imagine it.

Thank

Anton, seems like you have got quite the bee in your bonnet.

I had the exact same problem you described. Phone wouldn't charge and drained super fast. I tried several chargers, cables, and connected it to a variety of devices. I solved it the way I described.

I agree, Apple shouldn't release updates that cause problems.

My guess is that ios 14 has some sort of bug that shuts down charging by giving your phone a "too much electricity" signal. If it is a software issue, you probably didn't need a new battery.

Try what I suggest and let me know how it goes. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for the positivity. Your particular post stuck out to me as it described exactly the same symptoms as mine so I followed your thread intently. I noticed a lot of people where having similar issues but could switch their phones on or other slightly different issues.. can I ask, does your battery display now work correctly too? Ie, if your phone is half charged then it shows half full. My main concern was that the battery was showing 100% on both the failed batteries before the phone failed..

well it’s on charge and will be sitting pretty for 3-4 days until I dare to put my sim back in. Ps thank you for you’re reply and thank you for you’re help in this issue.

Andy

Hi Eroll

Having a degree in electronics from years gone by and also flying nitro and lipo powered helicopters for years I do understand the dangers that come with these batteries but the way the Apple tech’s response to me disclosing the fact I had a replacement battery installed was quite frankly pathetic and somewhat autonomous as though they had read it right from a script.. I do hope there is some resolve to this for the many people suffering this self and same problem but I am very very doubtful 😒😒

Hi Anton, here are my steps in trying to resolve this issue:-

4 months ago I obtained iPhone XS in payment for the install of an alarm system. The front screen was cracked and the rear glass was also cracked. I sent the phone to my engineer who laser etched the rear glass off and replaced for new. Replaced the front screen for genuine oled and not lcd. I also asked him to replace the battery for good measure. The phone was returned 2 days later and all was working ok.

2 weeks ago today ios14 installed into my phone during the night. Mid Monday my phone switched off albeit still showing 100% battery. Tried to charge and switch back on but phone showed battery symbol with thin red line. Pulled the charging lead and it showed to plug back in.

Sent phone back to engineer Wednesday and he replaced battery and was sent back to me last Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon the phone fail again. Same symptoms, 100% battery showing but switched off and showed flat battery symbol.

Monday, took phone to 3rd party for another replacement battery. Received back same day. Sim was already removed and in a back up phone. Left phone on charge with both WiFi and Bluetooth on switched on for a further 4 and a half days. Removed charger Friday evening and used it for approx 30 minutes on WiFi only (no sim inserted) whilst monitoring battery percentage. Kept at 100% then switched off again, not to come back on. The rest is in my previous messages going to apple etc

Andy

Hi Anton,

I fully understand each and every step but unfortunately I don’t have the hardware to perform this but the good news is my engineer does. I will contact him tomorrow and send my phone off to him in hope of this being the fix. I will indeed keep you posted on this issue but once my phone goes, I will not get it back for a good week to week and a half ok. Thank you for your help and will reply when I know anything new 👍🏻👍🏻

Updated my phone to iOS 14.1 yesterday and now can't get it to charge past 30% I've had it plugged in for hours it says that it's charging but, it's not moving past 30% As soon as I try using it the battery drains within around 5 minutes to 10% and that's just checking emails. Before the update it was fine and would charged to 100% within an hour and last all day. Thanks Apple! I now have a phone I can't use! :(

Hello to all,

with a battery tester for Apple bought from eBay, I figured out, my battery is discharged to the voltage level of 3.3 Volts (18mAh ~> 0mAh). I think because the voltage level is too low, the iPhone either won't charge it (SW) or it can't do that (HW). But the voltage level of 3.3 Volt is not to bad for the li-ion battery. It is just regular discharged battery.

The cell of li-ion battery can be discharged down to 2.5 Volts without any issues for the cell itself. The nominal voltage is 3.8V. It seems to be that 3.3 Volts is the lower limit for the discharged battery for iPhone.

I don't have any warranty anymore. I bought a new original battery from eBay (I tested it first, of course, it's original) and build in this new battery in my iPhone. And with this new battery it works! I can turn the iphone on and I can charge it with my original charging adapter.

My further questions are:

  1. Why the battery with this voltage level of 3.3 Volts can't be charged from iPhone XS?
  2. Why this is happened immediately after update to iOS14?
  3. Is it possible that the iOS 14 does some super optimization work for iOS after the update and kills the battery with too much load (power consumption)?

My next steps are:

  1. To test the power consumption of my iPhone XS with external power supply.
  2. To check my original battery if it is damaged or not.
  3. Try to charge my battery directly from power supply to the appropriate level (10%) and continue to charge it with iPhone.
  4. If nothing helps, I'll just replace my old original battery with a new original battery and hope this problem is gone for me.

I will post here an update!

Thank you!

Update of my report: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251804766?answerId=253527075022#253527075022

The new original Apple battery I installed did the same after few hours. First it went very well, but then my iPhone restarted and started with empty battery. Bevore this restart battery had about 40%. After the restart iPhone show me only 1%. And I can no longer charge my iPhone.

I connected my iPhone again to the lab power supply and observed the power consumption. The current in stand by is about 60mA. The current consumption on homescreen was 300 - 400mAh. (Dsiplay brightnis 70%). But some times it rised sporadically and abruptly to the 1,5A (@3.7V) (5,5 Watt) This jump could be responsible for killing our batteries.

First conclusion

This issue have initially nothing to do with the battery. I think because of this buggy iOS14 there is sometimes to much load on the battery. This load kills the battery chip or the battery itself.

I went to Apple Store. They tried to read the data out and to do some diagnostics on my iPhone. But due to the fact, the device is dead they could nothing do with it. I don't have the warranty anymore, so I had to pay for a replacement or stay with it. I declined the offer.

Now, because of this update to iOS 14 my device doesn't work normally.

My next steps are:

I will do a hard reset and erase all data from my iPhone. Then I will update it to iOS 14.01 with iTunes and test it again with the original battery. If that doesn't help, I'll try to downgrade the iOS to 13.5 or 13.7. . if such downgrade is possible ...

I had the same problem this morning after updating iphone 6 (!) to ios 14. things worked yesterday but this morning after charging all night, went to open a heavy app and phone shut down, then tried all manner of attempts to charge and battery would not budge past 10%.

I did a quick online search, then update all my apps (manually, since I have auto turned off), and did a hard reset. I left the phone turned off and charging for less than 5 minutes, and when I turned it back on, battery was at 100%! Seems to be working fine now.

I won't pretend to understand why this occurred, just what worked for me. It does however seem to be a software glitch.

Ok. I see. I have similar behavior at the moment. But instead of 10% the iPhone show just 0%. I was able to charge it without problems but after sporadical restart it jumped to 0%. Real charge of the battery is about 60% now. And I can't charge it anymore.

I did power off and power on, but without success for the battery. Then I pulled out the sim card and after power off and power on the iPhone works normal. Battery is on 60% now. Charging is possible. I will test it some days without sim card.

Summary:

The problem can still be too high power consumption so that the battery electronics switch to such a state. Or the electronics of the iPhone in combination with the software that controls the charge and voltage level have a bug or some troubles with to much power consumption.

The fact is, my new battery behaves in the same way as my old one, but this new one is not defective, because it goes to a normal state without a sim card (I due long test now).
