Apple TV 3rd generation problems after update to software version 7.6

After updating to version 7.6 today, YouTube stopped working normally. When I watch video from YouTube and try to pause it, the Apple TV freezes for a minute and then reboots. Factory reset did not help.

LOL, well good luck waiting for Apple to reply. If you want to actually talk to someone from Apple use AppleCare or make an appointment at your local Apple Authorized Service Provider. Other than that you will not hear from them here and they will not be reading these posts. If you have feedback for Apple you can always contact them at www.apple.com/feedback.

It's not just not being able to pause a video. It's also not having all the other functionality that pops up when you bring up the menu: like, dislike, add to playlist, view the author's channel and see related videos.

Also using AirPlay is not really a workaround, since you are using a different device to run the YouTube app and the AppleTV now just plays the role of a wireless HDMI cable. Similarly using your Xbox for YouTube is not a workaround.

You are not alone.

Apple released an update... everyone thought that the problem was fixed... but no.

This problem still exists.

Well its only Google App that will pause forever your device... but apple TV gets #%@#^3.

BUT before this update... the app was working fine. So Its might be related to apple in the end.

Apple has no clue about it... but clearly they don't care... as this device is no longer for sale ;)

For Apple It's like someone says to them about an software bug on ipad 2nd Gen device... on ios 11...

If you have the Apple TV connected to your PC and seen by Itunes hold either shift or CTRL(can't remember which it may be they both work) when you click restore and it will ask you for the image you want to restore. You need to make sure you have the correct image for your version.

One thing to be aware of is even if you have the auto update turned off it will keep asking you and the default option is to update so it will do it anyway and you'll be back to square one. I've had to restore mine 3 times and of course every time you have to put all the passwords for the services back in to get back to a usable state.

I've just checked again and it's the SHIFT key you need to hold while you click restore. It will then come up with a box asking where the file you want to restore is. I assume you have downloaded the correct file for the restore? Itunes won't have it.

I've been through the process 3-4 times because after a power cut the AppleTV decided to update itself even though Auto update was off, the other two time were because the Appletv had been left on with no activity and decided to update itself.

I had to put mine in recovery mode for it to be seen by my Win10 PC, once it shows in Itunes, hold the SHIFT button and click RESTORE at the same time and it will open a window asking where your restore image is.

So it is still running 6.6.1?

I think in that version YouTube was removed because it was not compatible with the current iteration of YouTube. Just like on one of the original iPod touch with Apple's YouTube player, it won't work.

You need to upgrade to 7.5.

7.6.1 is the one that everyone is having problems with, not 7.5.

You need to upgrade to it with the downloaded 7.5 binary which I will not link to here. You can find it by searching for it on TidBITS in the comments regarding to the article that deals with 7.6. Scroll down in the comments and you will find a user that posted a link that works. Don't use the one that the author of the article posted.

But yeah, you're not going to get a working YouTube on 6.6.1.

Be aware; regardless of your current OS, your Apple TV will force through the update to 7.61 (or whatever the latest is at the time) even with Auto Update switched off. It basically waits for any inactivity and then installs the update. If you manually

installed 7.5, your Apple TV would, after a few days, still end up at 7.61, you can’t stop it. You just end up chasing your tail.

To clarify the 7.6/7.61 fault, providing you don’t try to pause a YouTube video (you can skip backwards and forwards) it won’t lock up. Only pausing causes the lock-up. The lack of pausing also prevents related videos and the video’s channel from being accessed easily, but if you’re careful, while far from ideal, you may find it easier to put up with it until Apple hopefully provide an update fix.
