Safari 14 extremely slow after download

Safari 14 installed automatically last night. Today, it is unusable as it takes several minutes to open a web page. My internet connection is fine since both my iPad and iPhone open pages quickly.

Sometimes I get the Safari Can’t Open the Page. The operation is not permitted (NSPOSIXErrorDomain1). This happened on Apple’s home page.

My iMac has been restarting by itself overnight occasionally. The error report kept showing a symantec file in the report. I uninstalled Norton Safe (Xfinity/LifeLock free version). It appears that was causing the issues with Safari 14 after the auto download/install a few days ago. So far everything is back to normal

I have the same situation on my MacBook Pro mid 2014 and Imac 27 Late 2015. I did everything to ensure that the culprit is not one of my machine. In fact, the reason on my machines is javascript in Safari 14, which should be much faster than in Safari 13, but makes everything extremely laggy and slow. When scrolling, you can see pictures loading slowly, often I see a white page without content, which is loading later. When I switch Javascript off, the problems are gone. I think Javascript is broken and we need an update.

What I did:

  • delete cache and cookies
  • boot in safe mode
  • boot in secure start mode
  • compare with chrome. Chrome is ultrafast
  • Delete Java 8

I have no special software against viruses or VPN connections.

For me, there is no question, apple just did a very bad job in Safari 14

Finally someone wrote about this.

I have something similar. It takes forever (Safari freezes for awhile) to add a page into a Bookmark or into a Reading List. Also when I go to Safari Preferences and switch between tabs it takes some time to do that.

I see the same behavior on both of my Macs (MBA13 early 2015 and MBP 15' 2019) that run latest Catalina.

On MBA13 I even tried to reinstall MacOs while kept all data but that didn't help.
