iPadOS 14 Photos app crash

After updating my iPad Pro 9.7" to iPadOS 14 I am getting a consistent crash in the new Photos app. I tapped to see all my albums. They don't show; only Recents showed but none of my existing Albums that had been synced from my Mac. Tapped the < Photos link to go back -- crash. Then Photos would always open in Albums display and consistently crash when I tapped < Photos to go back. No way to view my existing photos on the iPad, which showed on first launch.

I restarted the iPad. No change; app still crashed when tapping Photos from the (mostly empty) Albums display.

I have one photo in the Recents album. I can display that. When I displayed that photo I saw a message at the bottom of the screen that said "Syncing..." (There are about 700 photos that were SYNCed from Photos on my Mac.) When I tapped < Albums I got back to the Albums display (still missing my Albums). I tapped < Photos at the upper left of the screen and the app crashed immediately.

Opened the Camera app on the iPad. When I tapped on the Preview icon I could see the photo in the Recents album. When I then tap on All Photos at the upper right I see ALL my photos on the iPad, confirming that they are really there. But when I tap on < Photos at the upper left on the All Photos screen, the app crashed.

Now when I open Photos on the iPad it shows all the photos, which was a view I couldn't get to before in the Photos app as it was stuck on the Albums view (missing all my Albums). But when I tap < Photos at the upper left, the Photos app still crashes. And now I can't get to the screen in Photos that shows Syncing...

I tried resetting the Memories but app still crashes. Device storage is not an issue as there is still about 60 GB free of 128 GB.

Note: iCloud syncing is OFF, has always been OFF, and will always stay OFF.

Suggestions? I'm holding off updating my iPhone 11 Pro Max which has the same photos and albums synced from my Mac.

YIPPEE! Thanks for the great tip.

I clicked the Sync button in the Mac Finder iPad window, it did its thing. But the Photos app on the iPad still crashed when tapping < Photos.

I then selected another album in the Finder window to sync and clicked Apply. It did its thing. AND the iPad Photos app did NOT crash when I tapped < Photos. I can now view my Albums at the end of the long sidebar list. Terrible UI but at least the app no longer crashes.

Thanks again!

Photo app crashes with slideshow function. It handles a few selected pictures fine but I have 35000 on my iPad Pro...I've now managed to incrementally test it with up to 12000 without crashing but the previous OS didn’t blink with all 35000 of these yesterday before the update. Fix it as that’s the only reason I have this (and a half dozen other iPads) with about 35000-40000 pictures each to distribute my collection of 250000 that I play around the house. My collection of 160gb first gen Apple TV’s does better than these updated ipads!

I have the same issue as Mr. Weasner. Both the Photos and Camera apps crash if I try to select any album besides 'Recents'. I have over 16,000 images divided amongst 400+ albums on my 10.5" iPad Pro imported from my iMac running the last version of Mojave. These images and albums still exist on the iPad and are still accessible by 3rd-party apps such as the latest Pixelmator Pro...

I have a 2018 12.9” iPad Pro and also have the Photos App crashing that I haven’t been able to figure out. Once it crashes, I can only get it to open by opening it in split screen mode with another app. I can then drag it to become full screen. If I try to get the sidebar to open, that is when it immediately crashes again. I too have rebooted numerous times without any effect. iPadOS 14.0.1 is what I’m currently running.

I connected my iPad to my MacBook Pro and the MacBook said it couldn’t connect without a software download. Once that was completed it transferred photos to my iPad and the problem was resolved! I didn’t do anything other than let Apple download software to my MacBook. I let my iPad run last night as it was curating and organizing photos. Runs great today.
