I have been having the same issues trying to update an iphone 7 to iOS 14 through iTunes on Windows 10 - and getting error 4000 blowups! but THERE's HOPE w/ the following protocol...

After many tries and holding my breath on multiple occasions ... still No Joy!

and with windows slowness with iphone USB Backups especially with a large iPhone memory - can U say UGH!?

BTY Do any of you know why is it so much faster for me to backup an iPhone with iTunes on a Mac ~ 1/4 the time ... as with iTunes in Windows on a PC?

So - According to several different researched suggestions I did the following:

1) Double checked to be sure that my BitDefender Malware protection et.al. was not showing something it thought it was protecting me from - nada! - no red flags there...

2) So I updated to newest itunes and restarted computer to cleat memory and cache.

3) Then found (see reference below) - I Turned Pass Code OFF for my iphone + Re-Booted the iphone

4) Then re-connected the iPhone with USB cable to newest iTunes on Win 10 and

... in iTunes clicked on iPhone icon

... and selected Update -

...and this time IT WORKED! slow as Pooh ... but it worked.

NOTE: something about the definition of insanity here - really not a smooth update experience from Apple this time! Ya think something got rushed?

BTW Of Course You Won't need to remember To TURN YOUR iPHONE's PASSCODE BACK ON .. because iPhone will nearly force it (go figure ;-)

for what it's worth - this is the reference page (below) where I gleaned the "#5 Keep iPhone screen unlocked" (turn off passcode idea) from: https://medium.com/@zhengrongzhaogogo/how-to-fix-cant-update-iphone-error-4000-87f38d23c92c#:~:text=Go%20to%20iPhone%20Settings%20%3E%20General%20%3E%20Software%20Update.&text=iTunes%20error%20code%204000%20could,has%20been%20prepared%20in%20iTunes.

#5 Keep iPhone screen unlocked

iTunes can’t import data to iPhone because of privacy issues. You need to unlock iPhone screen when you transfer data between iPhone and computer.

Go to iPhone Settings > select Display & Brightness > select Auto-Lock > check Never.

Hi, I had the same problem. Here's the working solution - Have your phone unlocked all the time after you click 'Update' on iTunes. Input passcode on your phone when prompted and then go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and change this to 'Never'.

The update should go through now. And after the update you can go back and change this Auto-Lock setting back to what it was before. If this solution worked or didn't for you then come back here, comment and mark it as helpful. Good luck!

OUCH! ..."inapporpriate and includes inflammatory language" Really? - never written, nor meant as such.

I intended my response to be written and taken as a respectful suggestion to someone who - by your interaction score - has much more experience than I in this forum.

please accept my apology for not originally being clearer.

and yes - I agree it's a bug :-) ... which is why people are looking for and suggesting work-arounds because the update app in isn't working in multiple configuration situations without needing to take into account underlying settings.

...you've turned off ID/Passcode (which forces you to enter your apple password to change) and rebooted iDevice and still get the same error code? hmmm...

if still NO JOY! ... after you have completed an entire backup (for security) either in the cloud or on your computer you could try downloading the update to your idevice directly and upgrading from there - as long as you have enough data space left...?

best of luck - be well, stay safe
