Email photo as attachment, not embedded, in iOS 14

I just updated my phone to ios14. I have an hotmail email account I’ve used for years. Before I updated I could email pictures to my work email and outlook account and they would be attachments at top of email. Easy to save, copy, print, etc. Now the pictures show up in the body of the email. Full screen and not easy to work with. Is there a setting I need to change to get it back to the way it sent pictures before I updated. Thanks

SOLVED!

i figured out the issue with embedded vs attachment on IOS 14. If you send an email in HTML, it will always embed the photos. If you send Plain Text, the photo will be attached. Any formatting in the email triggers HTML. It could be your signature or any other text if it is bold, colored, underlined, italic etc.

If you have a formatted signature, you cant just change it, you have to delete it by selecting ALL then backspace to delete it. Then type your signature as plain text and your pictures will be attachments

My ipad came defaulted with a formatted signature, after changing it, this worked

Finally we seem to have got rid of the eejits trying to confuse whilst being condescending and we now only / mostly have folk trying to assist. In case apple do care and to be clear this is not only business but personal sending of photos. The idea of sending wee video along with photos works for myself and my pal / colleague. Not tried the other solutions. All very confusing that apple have done this on purpose.

cheers

As ever, fhfoote, whether an email is authored as plain-text or rich-text (which uses HTML to encode the rich text), images, photos, and other files have always been attachments, regardless how any given email client may display (render) said email.

Yes. A rich-text (HTML) signature, like any other rich-text, would necessitate the email be sent as rich-text.

Yes. Since plain-text has absolutely no mechanism for inlining any attachments, in any way, it is all but impossible for any email client to render (display) attachments inline with the text.

Since, regardless of email format, images, photos, and other files have always been attachments, there is simply no excuse for any email client to disallow users from bulk saving/downloading attachments!

Hence, users shouldn’t have to think about such recipient choices when they author an email.

By this argument, regardless the email format, if the email client disallows bulk saving/downloading of attachments, users should complain to said email client manufacturers!

That’s interesting, Pcmonica, that your attempt to go through your GMail account had a different result than others.

Of course, that assumes that sending emails from your GMail account actually sends the email through a GMail server! (Such is configurable by the user, so such is not guaranteed.)

Outlook to Exchange to Outlook would be expected to preserver the look of your authored emails, even if Microsoft went completely “rogue”, with respect to email standards.

Of course, if Outlook would not disallow users from bulk saving/downloading attachments, for both plain-text and rich-text emails—since both formats attach the photos and other files the same way, by Internet standards—this entire issue would be mute.

I like all the others in this forum are having serious issues with the Update of ios14. I must email pictures for work and some days there are 75-100 pictures that must be sent daily. There is no way possible to be able to do this now that they are embedded. They must be done as attachments and the update does not allow for any such fix. There are 18 of us in my company alone that are required to email pictures and we cannot based on the ios14. WHY can't Apple leave well enough alone and stop messing with what works. I see absolutely NO RESPONSE anywhere from Apple and there are hundreds of us questioning the issue.

This is a user-to-user forum. Thus there will be NO RESPONSE from Apple here. If you are sending that many photos a day email is the WRONG WAY to do it. You should be using a cloud sharing service: Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox.com, box.com or similar services specifically intended for sharing large amounts of data. All of them have end to end encryption, which email does not.

The frustration is growing. The solution of attaching a short video is no longer working. Are apple reading and altering to ensure we can’t do this?

I too would like to see some attention from apple to a resolution that his not time consuming. Apple are embedded in my family and my business however I am due some new gear soon and right now it will not be apple.

Dear Pcmonica, this is really odd - why it should work perfectly for me and others, but not for you? Are you running the latest update iOS 14.2? Possibly something was fixed after 14.1 which allowed non-MS Exchange e-mail servers to send photos as attachments? I don't use the Outlook App to send e-mails - just the native iOS e-mail handler but it is set to send from my g-mail account as the default. Hope you can sort it.

You should get some other product. That way you will learn that technology evolves, and any product with similar capabilities will work the same way. As this is a user to user forum no one here cares how you spend your money or how you misuse tools.

and, as I said, no one from Apple is here in this user to user forum except a few moderators.

Welcome, jjmIII_Apple, to Apple Support Communities!

First, as has now, apparently, been well established, this is not an Apple issue, and, indeed, cannot be solved on Apple’s part. (It’s not even known whether having an option to author email in plain-text format would solve the problem. However, having that option would certainly be an excellent suggestion to provide Apple as Feedback, through the provided Product Feedback channels!)

Second, as many have pointed out, Apple is not actually here. This is a user helping other users support community.

So, the best way to send Feedback to Apple is through the Product Feedback mechanisms already in place, for you.

Feel free to ask for pointers on providing Product Feedback to Apple! We are always happy to help!

I haven't used Outlook for years. I am sending photos either using the iPhone mail app or gmail and receiving them in gmail on a Mac desktop running Mojave 10.14.6, so I fail to see how the problem can possibly be blamed on Microsoft. The 1 second video trick does work, so thanks to whoever posted that.

Much less helpful is the pedantic quibbling over language. I don't think anyone else here cares if jpegs which appear as forking great images in the middle of the email are technically "attachments" or not. Since Halliday doesn't seem to share our concerns, or have anything helpful to add to the discussion, I wonder why he is still here quibbling rather than getting on with his no doubt rich and fulfilling life elsewhere.
