Email photo as attachment, not embedded, in iOS 14

I just updated my phone to ios14. I have an hotmail email account I’ve used for years. Before I updated I could email pictures to my work email and outlook account and they would be attachments at top of email. Easy to save, copy, print, etc. Now the pictures show up in the body of the email. Full screen and not easy to work with. Is there a setting I need to change to get it back to the way it sent pictures before I updated. Thanks

SOLVED!

i figured out the issue with embedded vs attachment on IOS 14. If you send an email in HTML, it will always embed the photos. If you send Plain Text, the photo will be attached. Any formatting in the email triggers HTML. It could be your signature or any other text if it is bold, colored, underlined, italic etc.

If you have a formatted signature, you cant just change it, you have to delete it by selecting ALL then backspace to delete it. Then type your signature as plain text and your pictures will be attachments

My ipad came defaulted with a formatted signature, after changing it, this worked

Amen to the last post! Help me, don’t give me info I find inconsequential. All I want is to send photos as attachments.

👍 Too bad the forum doesn't have an "ignore" button… his explanations may be 100% technically correct, but what's the point, if they add nothing to the discussion in terms of SOLVING the issue? He doesn't seem content to just stay out of this discussion, seeing that despite 40 pages, he has not been able to convince anybody to agree with his point of view that (I'm paraphrasing) it really has nothing to do with Apple.

Many users including myself don't possess his technical expertise and have asked him to try to provide his responses in a more concise and easier to understand format, to no avail. As a result, I find his full-page posts not only bury other potential solutions that may have been posted (they get lost in all of it), but they also create further confusion on the topic for anyone else who tries to muddle their way through this thread.

Mr. Halliday: I am truly curious if you could be kind enough to explain your thought process by addressing the above?

Even just there, it is Outlook that is not treating the standard properly.

Yes. Once again, all you have done is «view» the «look[es]», the appearances!

The problem is not the appearances—such are as recommended by the International Internet Standards governing email composition and interchange.

Rather than purely «look[ing]» at appearances, how about trying the functional test of saving all attachments!

OK. You win. I give up. No need to convince me anymore that you are 100% correct. So you don't have to spend any more of your precious time replying here.

The problem is not with Apple, but rather it is I, who is the ignorant and just doesn't get it, and continues to blame Apple…

Got it. 👍

It’s not you, Lotus9999, or others (except in the sense of refusing to see what is not obvious).

The problem is in not looking past the superficial and circumstantial evidence.

(There’s a reason why circumstantial evidence is not admissible within a court of Law: such is easily misleading!)

Those of us that have worked hard to understand what was actually going on, and the root causes, took about a month or two (starting in September) before we had a sufficient “handle” open this issue.

It’s understandable why those that haven’t worked as hard to gain a fuller understanding would have a difficult time accepting the realities.

We, your fellow users, are simply trying to help y’all to understand these realities, so y’all can make better informed decisions.

The hope is that, in this way, the real, root issue, may, finally, be fixed, so people will no longer be subjected to these time-waisting issues.

I agree 100% with you. I thought I clearly indicated that in a few posts above, where I said – perhaps also speaking for a few others here, based on their replies:

"No need to convince me anymore that you are 100% correct. So you don't have to spend any more of your precious time replying here." 🤷‍♂️

I just don't understand why YOU insist on repeating yourself so much?

I do hope, when working «tech support», that you will try to look beyond superficialities (appearances) and circumstantial evidence.

Once again, CJCragg, nothing but superficialities (appearances) and circumstantial evidence.

And even your circumstantial evidence misses the prior instances involving earlier iOS versions.

I do wish someone would actually try to invalidate my evidences. I’m a scientist. So that’s what we do: we work to invalidate hypotheses and theories!

Our level requirement of evidence is far higher than courts of Law, and even courts of Law disallow circumstantial evidence: it’s far too prone to mislead!

Once again, Lotus9999, I ask you “point-blank”: is the only issue you have with how Apple Mail creates emails with images/photos/pictures/etc., as a part or the entirely of an email, the appearance of the email? Or is there something more?

(I have asked others, who, like you, wished to only harp upon the appearances, this same question.

Please be honest!

Remember, the words you have used—especially their emotional content—in the past, when referring to the appearances vs. the functionality of performing bulk attachment operations [such as bulk-saves]; have already answered my question.)

While I enjoy the many benefits of technology, I also follow the motto "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The tech world does a lot of fixing things that aren't broken, which drives me crazy. OK, maybe "crazy" is an exaggeration. It's a peeve. What I realize when I find an issue with technology that I dislike, I look for a work-around and then move on with my day.

Mar 8, 2021 9:23 PM in response to TarHeelTech

Really, TarHeelTech?

Why would you waste your time and my time on nothing but an appearance, a formatting of an email?

Did I not make this clear enough just from your written description?

This is not even admissible evidence in a court of Law.

Were you trying to fulfill the requirement I stated as:

«If, however, you could actually demonstrate that the emails authored by Apple Mail are not actually emails with attachments, but do something else, that is not consistent with the International Internet Standards that govern email creation and interchange; then you would have something to accuse Apple of.»

Do you actually think that you have provided the following?

«I do wish someone would actually try to invalidate my evidences. I’m a scientist. So that’s what we do: we work to invalidate hypotheses and theories!»

If so, you have completely neglected the context.

The hypothesis, if you will, is the following:

  1. «Apple Mail is, and always has been, «send[ing] emails … where the photos are … attachments, like how it [has always] be[en] for years», even at those times, through the years, when this Outlook issue surfaced with previous iOS versions.»

When I use the term attachment, in the context of emails, I am using the term commensurate to the International Internet Standards that govern email creation and interchange.

I am, most certainly, not referring to mere superficialities (appearances). Yet, you have addressed nothing but mere superficialities (appearances), and circumstantial evidence.

I thought I could expect better of you.

Mar 8, 2021 10:37 PM in response to Halliday

Please, enlighten us with documentation on "International Internet Standards". WHO governs this? Provide an article. Provide a link to Wikipedia. Something. Anything. Otherwise, we will all believe that you made it up.

Sir, I have used a lot of email clients since I first checked email via a Unix command line (I believe it was called Vax) back in 1994. You love to call out Outlook and only Outlook. Why don't you call out Pine, Eudora, Elm, Thunderbird, GroupWise, or Apple Mail. Are attachments (or the superficialities) present or is that just a mirage?

Do you agree or disagree that when someone uploaded a picture using the native email app built into iOS 13 on Sept 15, 2020 that it arrived in all email clients as an attachment, but when that same person upgraded to iOS 14 on Sept 16, 2020 now the uploaded picture was embedded in the email? Do you agree or disagree with that statement?
