ios 14 Mail App is full of bugs

Since updating to ios14 yesterday Mail app shows a random badge of 3 or 5 unread emails. When i open the app there are no unread emails and ghost mail badge is gone only to re appear after few minutes.

Also noticed that if i manage to clear the ghost badge going to Home Screen and back will put the ghost unread emails badge to Mail app back. If you look closer to badge can actually see 2 badges one over the other shifted few pixels appart. I can replicate this over and over.

Restarted phone several times, erased email accounts and re installed them, tried all other solutions available for ios 13.x available on this forums with no success.

Very disapointed about Apple's decision to release ios14 with so many bugs.

Guys, go to your web mailboxes and cleanup the unread messages (check them one by one if necessary) .

I found old hangouts communications that were marked as unread.

And that was the reason for my ghost messages...

This is what worked for me:

  • Choose a new Apple ID password. Write it down because it may not populate from your iCloud Keychain later (I’ll explain more)
  • Reset your Apple ID password using the Apple ID settings on your iPhone - then sign out after the password has changed
  • Turn off your iPhone
  • Wait a few minutes
  • Do a hard restart - quickly press and release volume ⬆️ then volume ⬇️ buttons on the left side of your iPhone. Then press the start button on the right side and hold it until the white Apple logo appears on your screen.
  • When Home Screen appears go to Settings>Apple ID>Sign In and enter your Apple ID and the new password you just wrote down - NOTE: your iCloud Keychain may not activate until you sign back in, so please remember to write down your new Apple password before you sign out as mentioned above
  • After a few seconds your Apple ID will restore mail function and the ghost emails will no longer appear as a red badge icon on the mail app home screen. You may have to log back into subscription apps, I did for a few of mine. Also if using any Google functions such as Gmail or Google Maps you’ll need to log back in and toggle permissions such as location and web access.

iOS 14.1 is here and ghost unread email badge is still not solved.

When my INBOX is empty i can see a ghost badge of 7 unread emails.

I can now replicate this bug over and over again.

I use to keep my INBOX empty because once i replied to an email i move it to separate folder. Keeping my INBOX empty is how i know i replied to all emails.

This ghost badge appears only if INBOX is empty, if i keep 1 email in INBOX with READ status then ghost badge is not present anymore and count works correctly.

So this is the only solution i could find for this bug, which is more then Apple did in the past month where two new iOS updates were released that suppose to "fix bugs" except this one was not addressed.

Once again very dissapointed of how Apple fix this bugs in Apple made apps, i think is time to ditch the iOS Mail app and find another 3rd party one that works.

Until an IOS update: The only thing that I found which works: Select all emails, mark as read, select all emails again, move to Archives or Important folder (depending on the type of email account)

No more phantom “unread” emails; that notification for some reason I found annoying as it would have me check: is there a new email? Because at times the phantom email would disappear and there was an actual new email that had arrived.

For the time being — it’s solved!

My solution (that worked for me) move all your emails into the respective account archive folder; and make sure they are marked as “read”.... I found using my inbox as storage for incoming mail didn’t work well with the new IOS 14 update. You can always flag the items in your archive folders that you want to keep an eye on or consider important. In my case, the ghost emails were an irritation that I had to get rid of...

👍👍 Would be nice if Apple could let us know about work around bugs that shouldn’t be there in the first place.

the fake “unread emails” showing in the icon was such a waste of time when you are expecting an email. You see that a new email arrived in the icon, you take time to check, and nothing unread is there. And like most people, I don’t have time to search through my inbox what to keep or not; so the discovery of moving everything to the archive folder, making sure they were marked unread, solved the problem. It’s been a few months now and the ghosts never came back

When i unlock the phone Mail app has a ghost badge of 3 messages then about 2 seconds later badge dissapears only to re-appear again 2-3 seconds later. If i open Mail App there are no unread messages, if i manually trigger check for new messages badge is again gone but i can make it appear again if i go to widgets screen and back. At this point i can make that ghost unread emails badge come on and off as i wish. This is an awfully annoying bug and i am amazed that Apple could let this go out in a release version of iOS. I doubt that Apple QC team is not using Mail app to read internal emails or they have so many unread emails that an incorrect count badge goes unnoticed. Steve Jobs, i miss you!
