What is the red dot on iPhone screen?

On the new ios14, during a call there is a red dot at the top right hand corner of my screen (not on the call notice on the upper left)

Thanks for asking this. I was wondering as well. What I have learned from your question after sorting through the answers is that

  • The light indicates that the mic is in use. It does not mean your activity is being recorded, though....
  • The light is helpful for security purposes. If the light is on when using an app that shouldn't have access to the mic, it could be for malicious intent, but most likely because at some point you gave the app access to use your mic. I suggest either revoking the app access to the mic or deleting the app altogether. https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/control-access-to-hardware-features-iph168c4bbd5/ios
  • Providing a link to the answer in Apple resources is helpful. Saying ”look it up” is not.
  • Some people are just plain rude rather than helpful. People come to a help forum for answers, not to be belittled. This has been going on for too long and people are finally being called out on it.
  • Some people see the app as red and others as orange or even yellow. It is still unknown whether that is a difference in theme or background or other settings. (It is likely not due to user perception given some people compare and see the same differences)
  • Set aside at least 30 minutes to go down the rabbit hole the next time a dot suddenly appears in an iOs update.

I still have zero idea what any of the above means. I just know I had a red dot in the upper right corner of my iPhone. Based on what was written by others It’s still not clear. Do you mean the Dark background option will make the dot appear a different color? Why? Why can’t the dot be the same color regardless of the background. That’s not helpful by Apple to make colors change that way on this subject. Because I know that regardless of my background being light or dark that other colors remain the same. IE Apps etc.

C&#43, your reply is so spot on. You definitely have a way with words to get your point made effective and without being nasty. Not all folks are like you said computer literate and the field is always ever changing. Nothing nice or helpful to say then move on or share the darn link. That was rude period. I’m in a few cooking groups on Facebook and people are always asking the same question all time. Sometimes I feel people are looking for a chance just to interact and we don’t know that. I politely tell them about the internal search engine within the group and give them the link that answers their question if it’s long response or answer the question quickly. People are downright NASTY! It’s sad... sorry nothing to do with the original post but I felt compelled to respond to your post and tell ya. thanks! 👍

When the person said that the light indicates the mic is ”working”, they meant that it ”in use”, not that it is ”functioning”.

The purpose is for security by alerting the user that an app has access to your mic. For most apps that is expected, like making a phone call, but if you are on a banking or shopping app, that would be suspicious and warrant revoking access to the mic for that app or uninstalling it.

New iOS 14 feature warns you if someone is spying on you through your iPhone: Look out for the orange dot at the top of your screen

To say that it warns you if someone is "spying" on you is a little bit misleading. It's click-bait headlines like that that have encouraged people to think that the dot means someone one is recording them. In fact, the dot does not tell you if someone is spying on you. It tells you if the microphone (or camera if the dot is green) is active. In most cases, the use of the microphone is completely legitimate, e.g. Phone, Siri. Seeing the dot when there is no app that the user thinks should be using those functions could (but may not) mean that their privacy is at risk.
