As the description states I updated my Iphone X to IOS 14 and now many app's don't use the full screen. I have Zoom turned off and have power cycled my phone. App's like facebook, Weather Bug, Chrome and many others have a gap between the top and bottom of the screen when in portrait mode.

I figured it out. Go to Settings -> Display & Brightness. Then go to the bottom to the Display Zoom. Change the View to Standard.

This fixed it for me. I was actually in standard at first when it had the display defects. Toggling to zoomed fixed it. Then toggling back to standard, I have not had any problems since.
Many of them will need to be updated.
Now try a forced restart.
I guess you missed all the stories where developers were complaining that they were caught of guard by the release of iOS 14 and are not ready with their updates. And iPadOS is not part of the equation, it is now a different iOS. Wait and see if the apps in question (is it all of them or can you list them) get an update sometime in the next two weeks.
And this is how many apps? Have yo tried a forced restart?
The problem seems to be with EVERY non apple based application. In Portrait mode the is a black area on the top and bottom. In Landscape mode there is a black area on the left and right. It's as if every application that is not apple doesn't know about the size of my iphone X screen. UGH
If I use display zoom on my iPhone XS I have borders on my apps for some reason they act like they would as if they were on an iPhone 8 or 8+ having black bars on the top and bottom. As soon as I turn displays them off it uses the full screen again. I did have to restart it for it to kick inv Don’t think that’s the right answer for you and it’s super irritating to me. Hope they fix it soon.
Why? Facebook updates their app about every two weeks or so and often screws up my phone when they do. They are my first suspect if I start to experience rapid battery drain and that instinct has been right on several occasions. I don't use any Google apps so I cannot speak to that. What other steps have you taken to resolve this? Can you post a screen shot?
Lol u figured out what? Of course if standard view there is no problem. the problem is with the zoomed view lots of apps have big black bars up and down. They aren’t usable at all on a display like this
The “trick” worked for me too (iPhone 12 mini). Anyway there are any news if the issue will be fixed to have fullscreen apps with the zoomed mode as well? And/or if it requires a new iOS release to be fixed for all or it will require single developers to update their apps?

I checked and none of the ones I mentioned have no updates for them. All of them are working fine on my Ipad Pro that I updated just now.

This is happening to my mother's iphone xs, but my xs max has no issues whatsoever in any app. Weird
