HDMI-CEC is not working with Apple TV 4K

With my 4K Apple TV device HDMI plugged into my receiver, all CEC actions fail for all devices. I can plug in my older HD Apple TV and all is happy. Or removing the 4K device resolves the issue as well. I've just updated the 4K to tvOS 14 with same symptoms.

Anyone else experience this? I think the device itself has failed.

Cheers.

So I was having this exact same problem and tried everything in this stream of responses.

The only thing that fixed this was unplugging both the TV and the AppleTV for at least 1 minute.

After 1 minute, plug the TV back in, then the AppleTV.

Now use the ATV remote to sleep ATV and the TV now turns off again and will turn on when waking the ATV.

This is almost certainly not a device fail.

I experienced the same exact problem here, and I am CONVINCED it's a tvOS 14 issue.

How do I know ?

I have had the combination Sony STR-DN1080 amp, Philips (and Samsung TV) and the HD version of AppleTV for quite a while, and CEC never worked for me, resulting in me disabling it and living with two/three remotes.

I always thought the issue was with the Sony, since there were lots of complaints online about a"non-compliant" CEC implementation from Sony....and you know, it's Sony....

However, to my surprise, when I upgraded to the 4K AppleTV, and (for fun) tried to turn HDMI-CEC on again, it suddenly worked flawlessly! I could switch on and off the TV, amp and AppleTV with one action (using just the Apple remote). I tried switching back to the HD AppleTV and it was broken again.

All right, I guessed whatever issue that was, had been resolved with the newer hardware of the 4K or something.

Now the funny part.....I moved my "old" Apple TV to another TV/amp combo (Onkyo amp and Grundig TV) and set up HDMI-CEC. One remote - worked! Huh? Maybe the issue was with the Sony after all? Oh, well.

So I lived the good life for almost a year, then one day Apple pushed out the tvOS 14 update.

Once both AppleTVs were upgraded to tvOS 14 - HDMI-CEC was broken.....again....and now in BOTH setups. WTH?!?

Specifically, although I could wake the AppleTV/amp from sleep using the Apple remote, both TVs refused to switch off once the Apple TV (4K + HD) went to sleep.

This is clearly a tvOS 14 bug that I hope Apple can get fixed ASAP.

Very annoying!

Hi, I’m having the same issue. Cec is able to turn on my amplifier but it sends some malformed command as it select non-existent input. I have to manually select correct input. Powering off works normally.

Apple people - this is fundamental functionality! Get the issue solved please!

tv4k connected to a Sony amplifier. For the last 2 years it was working perfectly, so please don’t tell me I have to change cable or amplifier.

UPDATE

It seams that initial command sent to the amp is correct, it turns on and set input correctly. But right after that it switched to some wrong state and video stays on but audio is muted.

UPDATE 2:

Disabling AirPlay fixed the issue for me.

I am brand new to Apple TV and with an LG TV i noticed my LG remote controlled the Apple TV as fine as you can expect by having CEC enabled on the TV side. After the tvOS14 update it stopped working. I could get it back inconsistently with no real correlation to anything.

However Disabling Airplay worked IMMEDIATELY for me in solving this issue. My LG remote controls the Apple TV perfectly fine now and it makes absolutely no sense.

To be clear, when i first came upon the seemingly totally random and without logical justification suggestion to disable Airplay on here I at first took it as the all too common occurence of someone not really reading the thread but offering misguided advice anyways. However with no other solutions i tried it - and it worked.

Now im not saying disabling Airplay is the answer here, i dont think it really is because i immediately turned Airplay right back on again and my LG TV remote *continued* to work flawlessly with Airplay enabled. So its more like *toggling* Airplay got it to work.

But to me what this does do is it put it in stark relief that the Apple TV absolutely has some kind of bug with regards to this CEC issue and disabling Airplay triggers something that brings it to life. I hope they fix it soon because im concerned my LG TV remote is going to stop working again and being forced to again use the nightmare that is the Apple TV remote.

My TV is a Sony Android TV (2015).

I was able to regain the regain CEC by unplugging all HDMI cables from TV, factory resetting the TV and reconnecting all of my devices.

I can do all HDMI CEC functions on my Apple TV EXCEPT controlling the tv volume.

So I’m kinda back to step 1.

I can control TV volume with a old Roku I have so this must be an AppleTV issue since the 14 update.

Now that the Roku has AirPlay 2 support I might as well go back to it and just ditch the Apple TV.

It really is a **** shame, other than the CEC issue, the AppleTv was mu favorite streaming box. I will admit, going back to the Roku remote kinda made me appreciate how much I missed having a good remote for navigation.

I have had this issue ongoing once in a while, different versions of software from ATV4K or TV.

This is how i solved it.

When HDMI-CEC isn’t working properly, you need to turn everything off at the plug and remove all HDMI cables from your TV. (Or if you are connected AV amp from there, my case i only have one HDMI cable that comes from TV to AV amp and every other device is connected to AV amp via HDMI cables)

Next, turn your TV on first. Then, one by one you need to connect your devices back in this order.

So if you have any external sound devices (soundbar or AV amp), you need to plug these into an HDMI port on your TV first, and then power them on. Next, plug in a set-top box, such as Sky Q, via HDMI and power it on. Finally, follow up with media players and Blu-ray players.

after this you should be able to choose on/off option again from your ”Control TVs and Receivers”
