Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Activation lock on open box mac from Best Buy.

So, in February I purchased an open box Macbook Pro from best buy. I did not know it at the time but it had an activation lock on it from the person that originally bought it and returned it to best buy. Now, after doing a fresh OS install it's fully locked. I cannot use it.


Best Buy takes NO responsibility for selling me a mac that was already Activation locked and will not help. Apple keeps running me in circles telling me to send them copies of my receipt (which I have done, twice) and they tell me that's insufficient to unlock this mac. So, now I have two companies washing their hands and me with a 2k brick in the middle.


What is a person to do?

Interesting. I just booked an appointment for one week from today at my nearest Apple Store location (then immediately canceled it). Took about 20 seconds online. Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

If you can't get an appointment, I would think educating Best Buy re. their responsibilities would be the best approach - after all, they sold the device. Did they claim that it had the previous owner's info removed or in any way imply that this was properly prepared for sale following these:

In a well composed snail mail letter, I would point out that they sold the device implying that it was usable which it is not. So, very simply: either contact the person they allowed to return it to follow above Apple instructions or simply issue a full refund.

Your only recourse is Best Buy.

Apple requires proof or purchase and proof of identity, which I suspect means they need a receipt with your name on it, and a valid, government-issued identification. If there is one open near you, try making a Genius Bar appointment and bringing both of those (and the Mac) to the appointment.


If the receipt does not show your name, I suspect Apple will tell you that is insufficient documentation.
