when using an external mic for iphone videos, audio only plays back in one speaker

When using an external mic for iphone videos (iPhone 8, connected with proper cables to FocusRite Scarlett), audio only plays back in one speaker. There is no longer the option to record in mono (which pushed the same signal through both channels on earlier videos I made) under camera setting, only under accessibility, which didn't work this time.
