WatchOS7 update problems

My series 3 completed an auto update overnight to Watch OS7. Today it has shut itself down at least 3 times, locked itself while on my wrist about 4 times, failed to load complications on multiple faces (weather, activity rings, date etc), disconnected from my phone at least twice. It has also dropped to less than 50% battery in about 8 hours, normally it is still in the 80’s. Is anyone else having these issues? This has been the buggiest upgrade I have seen.

Here's another update to my Series 3 OS7 issues & troubleshooting. I'm having the frequent reset issues like others on here, using an xR and a Series 3 Nike Edition on OS7.

  • Did a phone-free reset (set watch on charger, hold side button until power options appear, hold crown until "factory reset" options appear), and after resetting I set the watch up as new device. It loaded with OS7 and then had to update to 7.0.1 again. After doing this, I was able to go 24 hours+ without the apple logo appearing.
  • Changed the watch face from the default, which for some reason was the last Activity face, the one that's predominantly text-based, to a simpler Numerals face with no additional complications added to it. That has seemingly increased stability as well.

By clearing out anything hung up in the watch (phone-free reset with new device setup) and by removing any additional stressors on the hardware (no complications, simple display) I've increased device stability. The more I play with it and observe responses, I think the Series 3 is running into hardware limitations that Apple doesn't want to disclose/didn't properly account for. I say that based on the following observations:

  • These aren't full-on hard resets. The numeric passcode is never required. It's almost as if the watch is resetting a smaller component and throws the apple logo up while it does it. Maybe it's just clearing the cache repeatedly?
  • My xR is on iOS 14 and—simultaneous to the numerous watchOS7 issues—I noticed my phone was having bluetooth issues. It would show a connection to other devices, but it would not allow any interaction. So, it would show a connection to my earbuds but audio would play through the phone speaker. It showed a connection to my Echo Auto, but audio would come through the phone speaker only and the Echo Auto could not detect the phone. Had to unpair/disconnect everything and reconnect to restore. I wonder if the watch doesn't offload/dump some memory overflow/processing tasks to the phone when busy, and is having difficulty syncing to the phone via bluetooth, and that's causing the apple logos?
  • I have hit the side button several times to find the same group of apps (Messaging, Music, Activity) running in the background, even though I've never activated them. If it's pulling default apps to run in the background, that could be unnecessarily tasking the watch and causing memory issues.

I'm not so sure that what we're experiencing isn't due to syncing issues and/or hardware limitations & memory issues that Apple doesn't want to admit to.

I recently purchased a 6 and had issues with the watch locking on my wrist & had a couple of random reboots. After working with a senior AC advisor & the engineers, next step was wearing it on my opposite wrist as I have a small piece of a tattoo that the watch covered. I didn’t think that was the issue as I’ve worn an Apple Watch for over 3 years (a 3 & a 4) & never had a problem. Well, I’ve had NO issues with it on my un-tattooed wrist. I looked on the Apple website & read about the sensor redesign so for me, it seems that was the problem. I was pretty surprised but glad I found out what it was. I’m already used to having it on the opposite wrist so hopefully case closed for me. Hope others get it resolved also.

Series 3 GPS here. Tried out the watchOS 7 beta back in August. Worst update ever. I kept experiencing bugs such as seconds on the watch face lagging and rebooting twice a day. Sent it back into Apple to get it downgraded and bought another temporarily in the meantime so I wouldn’t lose my streaks. I returned it when I got my old one back. I am glad to be on watchOS 6 right now. watchOS 7’s official release is no better. After reading about how bad it was, especially on the series 3, I am grateful for this storage bug preventing my watch from being automatically updated to this dumpster fire against my will. Otherwise, I’d have to upgrade to a newer, more expensive watch. I will never update to watchOS 7 as long as it continues to be this bad.

My series 3 Apple Watch never spontaneously rebooted until watchOS 7.0 and still occurs after the 7.0.1 update. I tried the unpair - pair my watch ‘fix’ and while better, the problem still occurs.

Today I observed and important clue about all of this.

After walking my dog this morning, I went to shower and placed my watch on the sink face down. The heart rate green LEDs are on. That’s odd since they normally go off when the watch detects it is no longer on my wrist. Waited a minute and the LEDs are still on. Put the watch back and had to unlock it (watch knew it was no longer on my wrist) and had it take my heat rate. When that was done, I took off the watch and the LEDs stayed on for another -5 minutes before finally turning off. I have never observed behavior like this before. If this sort of behavior is occurring while on my wrist, no one would even know it. The brightness of the LEDs tells me they would run through the battery charge rather quickly as it has a small battery. I see a lot people are reporting reduced battery life in addition to the reboot issues.

I also wonder if this could be related to reboot issue too. The Apple Watch is very small package that most likely has some thermal limits. Normal operation has it placed against the human body the can be upwards of 90 degrees. The stuck on LEDs would drive up the temperature even more. What does the Apple Watch do when it’s internal temperature gets too high? I would not necessarily feel this on my wrist due the fiberglass back for the heart rate sensor and I might not be in contact with the metal part of the case at this time (now I might expect this isolation to work both ways, but internal temperature is what matters here). In more than one instance of rebooting, it took a minute or two before I saw the Apple logo appear (I kept hitting the buttons trying to bring it back to life during this time). Could the delay be the watch is simply cooling down enough and then it comes back to life?

One other observation, when the reboot issue started, my local weather was hitting the 80’s and now it is just hitting the 60’s. I am seeing fewer reboots now.

This is in the "for what its worth" category: I had a long conversation with an Apple senior tech support advisor 2 days ago. He had me run diagnostics on my iPhone and watch both. He promised to call me back today, which indeed he did. I just got off the phone with him. He told me that Apple was "definitely aware" of the problem that was occurring with "a few" people with series 3 watches. He inferred that the diagnostic logs from my watch and iPhone that he sent to the engineers showed the "problem". He said he was told that "they" were working on a "patch" to fix the problem. But he didn't have any timeline as to when this would be made available. This is the first time of my three separate contacts with tech support where one of the techs even acknowledged there was a problem. All of the others techs said, "This is the first I've heard of this". And this was almost 3 weeks into the fiasco, and they claimed no one else had complained of an issue. Apple needs to have a mechanism for being informed early of major disasters like this. And furthermore, Apple could avoid a great deal of bad user sentiments and negative comments all over the internet if they would publicly acknowledge the problem early and give some guidance as to when the problem would be resolved.

I hate to trample enthusiasm, but I put the 7.0.3 beta on my watch on Thursday and continued to have issues. On Friday I reset the watch to factory and set up as a new watch. I kept the default face which, for me, is the Nike activity face with three complications.

I had stability, with no reboots or Apple screens, from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. It was beautiful. That also happened to be when I was in the woods, with zero cell signal and no Wifi.

When I returned to civilization/mobile signal, the reboots started again. Not as severe as they had been, and the number of reboots/day is way down... but the watch is still not 100% stable.
