WatchOS7 update problems

My series 3 completed an auto update overnight to Watch OS7. Today it has shut itself down at least 3 times, locked itself while on my wrist about 4 times, failed to load complications on multiple faces (weather, activity rings, date etc), disconnected from my phone at least twice. It has also dropped to less than 50% battery in about 8 hours, normally it is still in the 80’s. Is anyone else having these issues? This has been the buggiest upgrade I have seen.

Here's another update to my Series 3 OS7 issues & troubleshooting. I'm having the frequent reset issues like others on here, using an xR and a Series 3 Nike Edition on OS7.

  • Did a phone-free reset (set watch on charger, hold side button until power options appear, hold crown until "factory reset" options appear), and after resetting I set the watch up as new device. It loaded with OS7 and then had to update to 7.0.1 again. After doing this, I was able to go 24 hours+ without the apple logo appearing.
  • Changed the watch face from the default, which for some reason was the last Activity face, the one that's predominantly text-based, to a simpler Numerals face with no additional complications added to it. That has seemingly increased stability as well.

By clearing out anything hung up in the watch (phone-free reset with new device setup) and by removing any additional stressors on the hardware (no complications, simple display) I've increased device stability. The more I play with it and observe responses, I think the Series 3 is running into hardware limitations that Apple doesn't want to disclose/didn't properly account for. I say that based on the following observations:

  • These aren't full-on hard resets. The numeric passcode is never required. It's almost as if the watch is resetting a smaller component and throws the apple logo up while it does it. Maybe it's just clearing the cache repeatedly?
  • My xR is on iOS 14 and—simultaneous to the numerous watchOS7 issues—I noticed my phone was having bluetooth issues. It would show a connection to other devices, but it would not allow any interaction. So, it would show a connection to my earbuds but audio would play through the phone speaker. It showed a connection to my Echo Auto, but audio would come through the phone speaker only and the Echo Auto could not detect the phone. Had to unpair/disconnect everything and reconnect to restore. I wonder if the watch doesn't offload/dump some memory overflow/processing tasks to the phone when busy, and is having difficulty syncing to the phone via bluetooth, and that's causing the apple logos?
  • I have hit the side button several times to find the same group of apps (Messaging, Music, Activity) running in the background, even though I've never activated them. If it's pulling default apps to run in the background, that could be unnecessarily tasking the watch and causing memory issues.

I'm not so sure that what we're experiencing isn't due to syncing issues and/or hardware limitations & memory issues that Apple doesn't want to admit to.

I had problems even when updating since, erasing all media and music, the space on the watch was not enough for update... I did have to start as a new watch to make the update. After that, the space calculation on my watch seems like to be broken, ads if the update file was still inside the watch but not seen from the counter... More, the apple watch 3 keeps asking me the unblock code (like when I did take off the watch from my wrist before updating...) even if I wear it quite tight ad before... neve happened before.

Many bugs for this update, at least on Apple Watch 3.

I have an Apple Watch Series 3 and since I updated to OS 7 I also have had the random shut off issue. Twice now it has shut off randomly and all I see is a blank screen. I have to press the crown and side button to reboot. Battery life seems to be the same as before I updated. I do notice that the watch seems more sluggish, there's a slight delay when loading apps or accessing the dock, this was not an issue before I upgraded. To be honest I'm regretting this OS update and really urge Apple to address these widely reported issues in a new 7.x update which will hopefully be released sooner than later.

I also ran into this exact problem with my Series 3 watch when trying to update to Watch OS7. I ended up unpairing my watch and basically doing a factory reset, then restored it as new. I should have taken this as a warning of what was to come, which I have described in an earlier post - same issues with spontaneously rebooting, sluggish, watch complications not working properly.

rubenherrera1 mentioned in a previous post that a senior Apple advisor acknowledged that it was a known issue. Hopefully that means we'll see a fix soon.

Info Apple iCulture news: is it true that Apple is currently doing business ???

Unfortunately, watchOS cannot downgrade, so Apple Watch Series 3 owners don't have the option to roll back to watchOS 6, the latest stable update. The release of watchOS 7.0.1 has also not resolved the issue.

If you have an Apple Watch Series 3 and are having issues, we recommend selling it second hand so you can upgrade to the Apple Watch SE for a reasonable amount.

my only way around this issue is turning off fitness and heart rate and not one single 3rd party app. the almighty apple has deemed its time for a new one or else random rebooting is now a part of the ownership of it lol been dealing with this issue since the watch os7 was released. fun times. im on senior advisor number #7 woooooooooooooo!

I contacted support via online chat..

they ran a diagnostic on my watch and couldn't find any issues.

But they did say:

"Well yes, checking my resources I found this issue is kind of common. Apple Support Advisors carefully log all reported issues to ensure that product trends get the attention they deserve. Apple tests its products before shipment, but when issues do emerge, Apple works quickly to resolve them. So in this case you can use the watch normally, but the restarts will keep happening until Apple can fix the issue, ok?"

I had the same problem. I went through every maneuver I saw online and I couldn’t get it to work. Then I reasoned that since my computer was reporting inability to communicate, I started over from scratch. But first I connected my iPhone physically to my computer with USB cable. I got a strange dialog that said I needed to download something to allow my iPhone to connect. I clicked “OK” and ensured that my iPhone showed up as connected to my computer. I then followed the steps outlined to enable auto connect. This time the process completed in less than 10 seconds. I followed the same process on my PowerMac Pro with the same successful results.
