Built-in apps not downloading since iOS 14 and WatchOS 7 upgrades

iPhone 7 plus 128 GB

Apple watch gen 3 - no SIM

Hi,

I've upgraded recently to iOS 14 and Watch OS 7 and have problems downloading built-in apps (weather, find me, translate, ...) since then on both my iPhone and watch.

In order to upgrade the watch, I had to reset it since it's remaining storage was only few MBs and uninstalling apps was not freeing much space (WatchOS 7 upgrade was telling it required 3.1 GB of free space from the 4 GB in total ...).

After that watch reset, I could pair it again with my iPhone and do the upgrade. But now built-in apps (weather, find my, translate, ...) are not being downloaded on the watch while 3rd party apps (Spotify, Outlook, ...) does ...

Then as a test, I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the built-in weather app on my iPhone and this is not working anymore either (the download icon switch from "cloud" to "stop" and then again to "cloud" in few seconds).

I've tried also to restart both devices and to disconnect and reconnect my Apple account in the Appstore app but this do not fix this issue.

To finish, all the built-in apps are appearing as "greyed" (about to download) when i press the crown button on the watch.

Any help to solve this will be more than welcome.

Thank you

Hi SravanKrA,

Thanks for your suggestion it helped me to solve the issue. I tried the same downloads via 4G instead of WIFI and then it worked. So I knew something was wrong with my local network.

At the end, this is my solution:

  • My home network router (Sophos UTM appliance) was giving my iPhone another IP than usual --> it seems that iOS 14 upgrade changed the mac adress of my iPhone wifi adapter ??? This was not matching the IP reservation specific rule anymore (and all the firewall, web protections, web filtering, ... rules including the exceptions in these rules)
  • Then I checked my router web filtering rules and could observe access to such URLs were blocked (reason being "byte Range downloads" from an untrusted source)--> http://updates-http.cdn-apple.com/2020SummerFCS...
  • To fix this: i added an new exception for such "byte range downloads" for all URLs like "*.cdn-apple.com/*"
  • This fixed the issue on the iPhone and the watch

Thanks for the hint again SravanKrA
