Mail App - Not processing or showing new received emails

Ever since the release of IOS13 the mail app on iPhone doesn't work like it used to.

New emails are available and the number of new messages is shown in the app badge.

Open mail app, the information text below confirms the existence and number of new emails.

However, those new emails are often not there (or not visible).

To make them show up, one of these actions usually works:

  • Force mail check again
  • Close and reopen mail app (that usually just forces a new mail check, I think)
  • Select option to show only unread messages, they show up after that.

This was not happening in IOS12 or before. Started with IOS13. Still not fixed in IOS14.

It's really annoying, it requires double the time and double the actions to see new email messages...

SergioRZ,

Have you completely removed the Mail app from your iPhone and then installed it again? This may help.

Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 12, iOS 13, or iPadOS device or Apple Watch - Apple Support

If that does not resolve the issue, backing up and reinstalling the software may resolve the issue. The following article has the steps on how to backup your iPhone:

By using the steps as listed under the heading "Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again" from the following article you can reinstall the software on your iPhone:

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately there is nothing in the settings to address this problem.

I'll try to explain this issue in a better way:

1- I receive new email (on the server, mostly Gmail).

2- The Mail App is aware of this, so it must have "fetched" or queried the server somehow.

3- Mail App shows notification (badge) with number of new emails received.

4- I open the Mail App, the new emails usually don't show (I think sometimes they do, but that's almost never the case)

5- To be able to see those new emails, I have to do one of these:

a) Force mail check again

b) Close and reopen mail app (that usually just forces a new mail check, I think)

c) Select option to show only unread messages, they show up after that.

In the settings we can control how and when to fetch new mail, to show or not show notifications and which ones... the usual stuff, but that all seems to be working fine. What's not working is that the badge notification doesn't match the actual content of the mail account.

It looks like the notification just let's you know there is new email to be received... not that it was actually already received and ready to be seen/read when I open the mail app.

For me this started happening with IOS13 on iPhone 8, problem persists in IOS14 with iPhone 11 Pro.

My friends with iPhone 11 have the same problem, at least the few that use Apple Mail App... most people use other apps for mail it seems, but I really like the simplicity of Apple Mail.

Hello SergioRZ,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

We understand from your post that new mail messages are not showing up unless you take an action like forcing mail to check for new messages again once the app is open. This article has some steps under the heading, "Check Mail Fetch and Notification settings", which may help:
