Desktop and Documents folders hidden—why?

When you add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive, the Desktop and Documents folders in your Home folder become hidden. These are still the correct folders; i.e. when opened, these hidden folders show your files stored in iCloud.

Why are they hidden? Why shouldn't I be able to access my Desktop and Documents from my Home folder? Are there any downsides to using Terminal to show them again?
