“Weak Security” Wifi after iOS 14 update

Since updating to the newest iOS 14, my WiFi connection has an alert of “Weak Security”. I’ve called both my internet/service provider and both show on their end the system is registering correctly. Upon reading more, apparently the newest iOS creates a new MAC address that may not be recognized on the modem you use, causing a “Weak Security” notice? My wifi connection on my phone is slower than if I were disconnected from it.

All my other devices work on my wifi.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this?

This is NOT an iPhone problem; it is a problem with your router settings.

A "Weak Security" notification means that your Wi-Fi router is not configured correctly. There is a new feature in iOS 14 that checks and displays a message if your router is not using the most up-to-date security. Note that your router has always had weak security, you just didn’t know about it until now.

See this Apple support article for how to configure it correctly—>Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support, specifically the section headed Security. And don't forget to configure your range extenders (if any) also! After changing the router settings be sure to forget the network on your phone, then reconnect.

Yes, you did have issues before iOS 14, you just didn’t know you had issues because previous versions of iOS did not check. But your router has always been easily hackable. Now you know it.

WPA2-PSK is not the problem. You specifically need WPA2-PSK (AES) rather than WPA2-PSK (TKIP). And you router should have WPA2 (AES) or WPA2-PSK (AES) (they are the same, BTW) unless it is more than 5 years old.

I’m in the same situation. This started only recently, and when I called Optimum/Cablevision, they said my router —which is theirs— complies with their security standards and I should ignore everything, they claim it’s an Apple problem. (I googled it and this problem actually goes back to 2015 for some folks.) But now I also can’t tap into their own Wi-Fi when I’m on the road because it won’t let me in because my ipad and iphone see it as weak security. What a pain in the patootie.

bottom line is that I can’t do anything and neither can the cable company.

If that’s what they said then their security standards are very poor. You should press them on it. I tossed my Optimum router years ago and installed my own.

A Weak Security message is just a message; it will (or should) not interfere with your using a network with weak security. If you can’t use Wi-Fi there is another problem, not that warning message.

You will need the user manual for the Wi-Fi router, or instructions on the manufacturer’s website. Or ask a teenager 😏

If it says Weak Security, that means that your router is not configured correctly. iOS 14 checks and displays that message if your router is not using the most up-to-date security. Note that your router has always had weak security, you just didn’t know about it until now.

I had the same problem. Apple recommends changing the security settings to WPA/WPA2 & AES. I logged on to my modem/router to check my settings and my security was ALREADY on WPA/WPA2 & AES which was the setting that Apple recommended here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202068 to get rid of this “weak security” notification. THE RESOLUTION to this problem: Simply change the name of you router (instead of using the name it came with for example, linksys or netgear) by logging into your router settings (refer to your router’s user manual). After I changed the name of my router the notification went away.
