“Weak Security” Wifi after iOS 14 update

Since updating to the newest iOS 14, my WiFi connection has an alert of “Weak Security”. I’ve called both my internet/service provider and both show on their end the system is registering correctly. Upon reading more, apparently the newest iOS creates a new MAC address that may not be recognized on the modem you use, causing a “Weak Security” notice? My wifi connection on my phone is slower than if I were disconnected from it.

All my other devices work on my wifi.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this?

I have the same question how can I fix it

This is NOT an iPhone problem; it is a problem with your router settings.

A "Weak Security" notification means that your Wi-Fi router is not configured correctly. There is a new feature in iOS 14 that checks and displays a message if your router is not using the most up-to-date security. Note that your router has always had weak security, you just didn’t know about it until now.

See this Apple support article for how to configure it correctly—>Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support, specifically the section headed Security. And don't forget to configure your range extenders (if any) also! After changing the router settings be sure to forget the network on your phone, then reconnect.

There are two totally unrelated issues. Weak Security has absolutely nothing to do with your data usage. All it means is that an outsider can hack your router. You have fixed that. But even with weak security your router should work fine. If it doesn’t that’s a different issue.

If your phone is not using Wi-Fi when you think you are connected to your network that is completely separate. As a first step go to Settings/Cellular and scroll to the bottom, and turn off Wi-Fi assist. When on, if your Wi-Fi connection is weak it will automatically switch to cellular.

The next possibility is the phone disconnects from Wi-Fi when it sleeps, to save battery energy. So if you have background processes running on your phone (such as streaming) it will use cellular data. The only solution for this is to keep the phone plugged in when streaming music.

As far as the Vigin hub 3.0 is concerned

if you go to the router setting type in

192.168.0.1 in search bar of internet address this takes you to router and underneath router is the hubs password enter it choose wireless signal. Make sure both

frequency's are enabled 2.4ghz and 5ghz

are enabled save changes

On iphone if it has still the same message forget the network on phone and reconnect this message should now be gone

The risk is that someone within range of your network will be able to use it and possibly view data going though the network. As long as you have remote management disabled there is no other risk.

You do not want it set to WPA3 if you have devices on your network more than a few years old. However, WPA2(AES) by itself is secure, and, if your router supports it, WPA2(AES)/WPA3 will allow devices that support WPA2 or WPA3 to work. As WPA2 was first published 15 years ago it is unlikely that you have any devices that are not compatible with it.
