iOS 14 iCloud mail App

I also have the mail issue of phantom unread messages. They only show up in Archives though. I do have the below issue. Background App refresh is turned off, and has been for awhile. The mail background issue is new.

How do I delete lots of messages? My Mail app is frozen. The emails in the inbox are all mixed up as to date. The inbox is over-full. I don't know how to delete a load of old emails without doing them one at a time.
