Airplay 2 multiple brand speakers streaming problems

One issue with Airplay 2, that remains unfixed, is when streaming (at least) audio to multiple brands of speakers, it cannot be done reliably. That is, the sound becomes skewed. For example, Sonos+HomePod won't work. Granted, Sonos has algorithms they use, it seems to me that the protocol for Airplay 2 should be a primary source of synchronization control?

I don't like being locked into one brand ecosystem; but this flaw prevents me from purchasing higher-end speakers; why bother when it can't be used reliably?

Anyone else have some insight into this?

Good afternoon Forrest,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are having issues using AirPlay 2 with your HomePod and Sonos speakers. Review the information below regarding setting up AirPlay with multiple speakers. As long as they are compatible with AirPlay 2, it doesn't matter what brand they are. Are you able to test with a different speaker without the Sonos speakers connected?

The resources below will help you address this issue:

AirPlay system requirements

How to AirPlay audio

"To stream audio to multiple speakers with AirPlay 2, add your AirPlay 2-compatible speakers and smart TVs to the Home app and assign them to a room."

Add a HomeKit accessory to the Home app

Take care.
