Apple Mail rules do not find the mailbox to be moved

Dear Support Community,


I like it when my e-mails are automatically sorted into the various mailboxes I have created.


However, lately I get the error message that mailbox XYZ does not exist (although it still exists in Apple Mail). If I edit the rules and refer to the desired mailbox again, this works until I close Apple Mail and open it again at a later time.


This problem occurs primarily when using the Gmail addresses (see an example below). Creating new rules does not solve the problem. All software is up-to-date.


Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?

Thanks for your fast reply. Your summary is correct.


I have tested alternative (not Gmail) accounts for testing purposes and the result is as expected: the rules work. It seems that only my Gmail accounts are affected by the rule problem.


Next, I checked your link and set up the rules again according to instructions (the problem still remains).


My macOS version is macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7 (19H2). Apple Mail runs in version 13.4 (3608.120.23.2.4).


Are there any additional hints or solutions regarding troubleshooting with Gmail accounts?

It sounds like you have rules set up to move mail to specific mailboxes, but you're seeing an error that those mailboxes don't exist, is that right? We want to help any way we can.


You mentioned that this issue occurs with a Gmail account; have you had a chance to try creating mail rules using another email account? If so, do mail rules work as expected with other accounts or mailboxes?
