Built-in Speakers on MacBook Air not working

The built-in speakers aren't workin on my macbook air. I've run the gauntlet of steps to take, as listed on the apple support site. Checked that I was off MUTE on the apps I'm using...looked at sound in system preferences to be sure I wasn't on low volume or mute...made sure my Airpods weren't connected (or any other blue tooth device). What's left to do to get them to turn back on???
