Voice Memos Will Not Open after updating to IOS 14

Hey bffrules1,

We understand you're having an issue with the Voice Memos app after updating. We'd like to help with this. To start, a software update was recently released. Do you show software version 14.0.1 in Settings > General > About? If not, let's back up your iPhone, then update the software and apps:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Update apps or use automatic downloads

Does the issue continue after updating? If so, let's offload the app and reinstall it. Offloading an app keeps the data in place while removing the app. Tap Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then scroll down to find the Voice Memos app. Tap it once, then tap "Offload App". When the option appears, tap "Reinstall App".

Powering off my iPhone 8 (long press of power button, then slide to power off), then booting it back from took care of the problem for me.

I rebooted my phone and it solved this issue for me. Life is back to normal 😃

I removed the app re-installed it - then turned off/on the phone and that seems to have sorted the issue. Unfortunately, this has happened before. There definitely is a bug there somewhere.

I don't blame you. I'd make the same call. I ended up downloading a 3rd party recorder called Audio Recorder (clever name). It does the job and I can save directly to Dropbox or Files. I'm over trying to get Voice Memos to work. And clearly Apple is in no hurry to address it.

Have you been able to resolve this. I’m having this issue on everyone’s phone 6s all recordings are muffled but can record in iMessage and no other audio issues. Audio recordings not working on 7plus, XR, 11 Pro Max, 11, or 8 either. If you try to save recordings from iMessage they also do not save. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, tried saving to files, restarted phones etc. Nothing works and I am very tech savvy.

Having the same issue with the app, not able to record anything or play back the old recordings. I have tried offloading and re-installing the app but still freezes when trying to hit record.

Same. Freezes. iPhone 7, 14.3 I'm downloading a 3rd party app instead.

I have an iPhone 8 plus and I’m having the same problem. I updated the software yesterday to 14.2. The voice memo app hasn’t worked since. It freezes when I try to record or listen to any previous messages. I’ve already offloaded the app and reinstalled, and the problem still occurs.

Just adding to this thread, as I'm also having this issue. Got an iphone 8 plus on the 14.2 iOS update, and voice memo app often crashes, but I cannot play recordings or make any new voice memos - almost as if it freezes. Is there a place we can contact the app support (or something) and get this "bug" fixed?

iPhone 7 plus since update, no called can be heard, no callers can hear me either. The microphone when I try 'Listen for Siri' does not work.... it used to.

Voice memos do not record and shuts after 10 seconds without recording.

Voice calls on WhatsApp fail and on Messenger also fails.

Reset network settings and reset phone, the problem went for about ten minutes and then all the issues above came back.

I have an appointment at a Genius Bar on 3rd April.

Why has this happened?

Can it be uninstalled and returned to a functioning phone.

Everything else works on the phone unless a microphone required.

Help!?

I have a very similar issue of the voice memo freezing after playing back for a portion of the memo. I have tried the uninstall the app and hard and normal shut down of the phone. This is very disappointing. My phone is an 11pro and up to date. HELP!

My voice memos stopped recording in early 2019. I would open it and hit record and nothing would happen. At first it would start recording after a few seconds, but soon it stopped responding entirely. It was that way on my iPhone 8S+ so I just used Music Memos to record everything. (I happen to be a professional musician but find it unnecessary for that). When I upgraded to my 11 last year, voice memos still didn't work. No amount of reboots mattered and I always run the latest iOS. Today I fond out Music Memos is migrating to Voice Memos, so I try voice memos hoping the bug is gone. It's just a different bug. Now it freezes upon opening and after closing and reopening a couple times, it recorded. But it freezes when I try to play back and I have to go through the same process. And forget editing the title. Forgive me, but this seems like it should be one of the simplest apps on the device. Please respond. A LOT of people have jumped onto this thread since your last response. Thank you.

I have never gotten this issue resolved. I rushed to update my devices to 14.5 hoping it would solve the issue. It has not. This has been the third update since I have reported the issue. I am now also having issues with #images in the iMessage app. When I open that it shows images then a white screen, before and after the update. I have approximately 20 apple devices in my home from pencils, to macs, watches, iPads, iPhones, AirPods etc. They are all buggy and always have issues. I’m so over Apple at this point.
