First time MAC Buyer in need of help

I recently purchased a MAC after decades of using a PC. When I was transferring photos, music, etc., I found that once I move over to the MAC, it overrides the create date for the files to today's date, rather than maintaining the original creation date of the the file. Has anyone run into this. Any help you can provide?

Unless you use the column view in the Finder the Date Created is only for the file, not the image. In the column view you can see the EXIF Created Date in the far right pane:

If you import the images into Photos they EXIF Created Date is used.

What system are you running? Copying a file from an external HD to my desktop kept the original file creation date with Catalina, 10.15.7.

However, with Photos the file name is changed during import to one that helps with the syncing with iCloud Library and is entirely different from the original file name. However, the file name is entered in the library's database and is used when exporting out of the library. However, when exporting a new file is created and the original name added. However, it is a new file and, as such, has the current date as the file created date.
