My screensavers will not load after installing the latest security update on 9-25-20.

After installing the latest security update on 9-25-20, my screensavers will not load. I'm running Mojave on a late-2013 27" iMac. When selecting the screensaver(s) in the System Preferences pane, the pane screen goes blank. I've restarted three times in safe mode and also reset the PRAM. Still no results.

This looks to be a big issue, and is affecting many screensavers built using Swift.

The issue is being tracked in a few places:

Since your problem is obviously different from the one this topic is trying to fix you should start your own topic after reading this Apple document: Writing an Effective Apple Support Communities Question - Apple Community

Remember we're not clairvoyant nor can we see your Mac so include detailed descriptions of software, hardware and problems being encountered.

Old Toad is right-my problem has nothing to do with screensavers, but it sounds like William Tomcanin and I are having a similar problem.

More info from https://mrmacintosh.com/mojave-2020-005-security-update-causing-major-problems-updated/

  • This only seems to affect Mojave (10.14)
  • The bug seems to crop up depending on the order in which you installed Safari 14 and Security Update 2020-005. If you installed Safari 14 after the security update, then everything is fine.

Thanks, Allan. I submitted a report/request from your link. Gripes me because I spent $60 on the app to make the screensavers and now neither will load. I've always paid attention to following guidelines and installing these security updates, but I've never had a simple update like that cause problems.

I'm running Mojave on a 27" late-2013 iMac. The iScreensaver application costs $69, by which I created two screensavers and installed both in August of this year. Each ran well until today, when I installed the latest security update. After that, not only will neither screensaver load, but once you click on their icons in the Screensaver pane in System Preferences, the entire pane window goes blank and stays that way for several minutes. All my other screensavers will load (even made by other third party developers), but not made with iScreensaver.

I had a similar experience to NathanMuir...

I installed the update on Sept 25, and immediately my 21.5" (late 2013) iMac became unusable (beach balling on every mouse click; my Time Machine backup disk showed NO backups had been made; EtreCheck showed MAJOR issues; etc., etc.)

I spent several hours running Apple H/W diagnostics, booted into Recovery Mode and ran Disk Utility on both my Macintosh HD and Time Machine backup disks;. No H/W errors or disk errors were reported.

I then used Recovery Mode to reinstall my last Time Machine backup image just before I installed the last Security Update, and now everything is operating normally again.

I have NO third party S/W installed on my iMac -- I have no idea why this particular update "bricked" my system.

Well, I gave up and installed Catalina. This did the job of correcting the SNAFU with the iScreensaver issue. I don't have to wait for Apple to come up with a fix. I did it for two other reasons as well: I had a 3D application that never did come out with a 64-bit version, and I finally got enough confidence in Catalina to not mess up Music (the new app replacing iTunes)—my iPod Classic works just fine with it. After almost a year of fidgeting over that last issue, I can say newer is better, for the most part. I do have a few beefs with Apple regarding the Music app, however. But I'll address those in another thread.

Thanks to all those who responded to this thread, and here's hoping those who are sticking with Mojave will get their fix.
