Touchscreen acting strange after iOS 14 update

I have an iPhone XS Max and I’ve just updated the phone to iOS 14.

Areas of the screen becomes unresponsive many times during the day. Locking the screen and unlocking it again seems to temporarily fix the issue. Removed the screen protector, and restarting the phone doesn’t seem to fix the issue. Updated to iOS 14.1 and the issue remains to emerge every once in a while during the day making it difficult to operate, navigate and especially type on the phone.

I found a fix that might work for others with this issue (especially if typing is the problem). Go into your keyboard settings (settings-general-keyboard) and disable the slide to type function. After disabling that function, my keyboard is no longer the bane of my existence.

This issue had been driving me insane since it makes the phone almost unusable. Hopefully it stays fixed and Apple resolved the issue WHICH IS CLEARLY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM!!!

Ok Apple, don't try to sell me a new phone. The iOS 14 update is the issue. Swiping down from right corner to get my flashlight... every time it locks up. Totally unusable for about 30 seconds then mini restart and back to main screen. This happened immediately after iOS 14 update. My phone is basically brand new so... no I won't buy a new phone. Maybe this is a Apple marketing strategy to improve phone sales?

I agree. This should be reported by all of us experiencing this issue.

However, I don't believe that Apple is unaware of this issue. This thread literally pops up on Google Search as soon as you type the words 'iOS 14' and 'Touchscreen.'

Anyhow, if you're reading this, please contribute by spreading the word; reporting this to Apple Support or by getting this thread out to a YouTuber or a Tweeter to help get the word out.

I hope this gets resolved with an update.. Even if it's after the iPhone 12 Launch.. (>_>)

I started having the issue where I could not type on the far right side of the screen/ use the far right side of the screen to close or do anything. Basically unresponsive after I installed the ios14 update. My only way around the issue of typing as of now was to switch to one hand typing and move the keyboard to the left side of the screen. At least now I can type 'p' and '0'. Still doesn't help when I have to close something with the X in the upper right side of the screen or cant rotate the screen.

I tried everything listed in this thread except a factory restore and nothing seems to have helped.

iPhone X here and same issue after I "upgraded" to iOS14. Have spoken to apple a few times and they just tell me that the iPhone X screen has a known issue and I can have it repaired at the local apple store or authorized apple repair. So frustrating as I can see here it is wide spread and affecting all newer models. It is a vicious circle and so frustrating. Has anyone gotten any resolution? I will go to my repair appointment today at Best Buy (authorized repair) but I know they will be clueless and just try to sell me a new phone.

I jumped through all of Apple's hoops to get the touchscreen working again after the iOS 14 update.

I fully restored, but the touchscreen still has issues, some fields in contacts don't populate or it reads: last used - ""(unavailable), and trying to type the letter 'p' sometimes works but it mainly recognizes 'o' instead...

Turning the screen off/on or hard resetting helps for a bit, but it goes back to glitching.

Tried to talk to an Apple Rep, but they were super condescending. They wouldn't even give me the link to downgrade to iOS 13!

They gave the option to take it into to get serviced, but considering we're in a pandemic, that doesn't sit well with me. My job requires constant phone calls so I cannot be without a phone. At this point, am considering moving away from Apple after being a loyal customer for decades. Apple isn't what it used to be. There seems to be no fix for this at this time other than to restore that doesn't fix the problem.

Well everyone, it sure seems like there is an issue going on with the iOS 14 update. Some people who have the iPhone X have screen issues and others have display issues that are not X related. Apple has become an extremely large and very profitable company these days and it's not surprising that they are disconnected from the people that got them there.

I spent $265 dollars changing the screen, the battery and a general checkup. They told me it was because I just used too much alcohol. It seems installing iOS 14 just made things worst. After I installed the IOS, the top screen was not working anymore. After I changed the screen, everything seems fine but I noticed some small glitches on screen like for example, it turns dark suddenly but itself. Another thing is that battery life sures gets drained faster.

I just hope Apple solve all this issues because it is really annoying especially after I spent all that money.

If this is so, then Apple's claim to be working towards sustainability is not quite honest. "Bricking" so-called "older" phones is manifestly not a sustainable strategy. It does however help one be a trillion-dollar company. I'm with you, VizAlbert - #DoneWithApple!

Furthermore, to make the claim that their own software update turns their own phones into "hardware problems" is logically not an argument that they might want to make. It makes some of us wonder about their hardware's quality, particularly in the post-Steve Jobs era.

And now they're sending out fixes for the brand new 12 series! The rest of us can get screwed. This tells me that in two years, when the 15s or 16s or whatevers are out, Apple will be treating them the same way that they're treating the rest of us now, those of us who spent $1000 on a phone two years ago, but who may not - particularly in the middle of an expensive pandemic - have the money with which to buy a new phone. I am so done with this company, and its failures to stand behind its devices. And I say this being old enough to remember my Mac Classic, which I loved. RIP Apple.

swapping with a new iPhone (proposed by Apple) is not a solution. You would do a full restore of your settings and hope.

I have tested my X restoring from different backups e.g. from a 6p and from my X before trying out different settings.

Worst behavior was with the 6p . I guess the default setting coming from iOS 12.4.9 to iOS14.x using new features from the hardware are accelerating the ghost touches. I have similar problems with non responsive areas with a brand new 12pm.

And it doesn't come from apps as the behaviour doesn't change even after updating apps.

Switching off several settings using touch features (slide to type, 3D touch, etc.) help a wee bit.

It is definitely a iOS 14 software quality assurance problem and Apple is still ignoring, that there is a problem.

The Same problem here on my iPhone XS after it automatically updated last night from 14.1 to 14.2 I called it possessed and ghosting since it types the letters that I don’t want to spell. Currently I am using my iPhone 6s to post this. This is clearly a iOS bugs. Pretty sad Apple don’t really care or listen about their customers issues/problem. In the meantime I already did the following: (1)Hard reset (pressing the vol up and down and holding the sleep/power button) - it did not fixed the issue. (2) Reset All settings - did not fixed the issue.(3) disable the swipe keyboard- didn’t fixed the stupid phone issue. My last resort is to factory default reset. But I highly doubt that will fixed it since this is software issue.
