Password manager by Estill Hill

Hello, I'm having problem with this apps after I upgrade to iOS 14. Overtime I want to open the particular password, it freezes. I tried to contact the developer (Estill Hill) but no luck. Anyone having the same problem like me?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, only the developer could have provided a means of exporting or saving the data, or perhaps syncing it to iCloud. If they didn’t there is no way to recover the data stored by the app. This is a security feature of Apple software; app data is “owned” by the app and is not accessible to any other app; not even Apple can access the data stored in an app.

I realize it will be tedious, but pretty much every application and website that uses passwords has a way to reset or recover lost passwords. Also, if you enabled Keychain in iOS your passwords will be saved in it. To check you can go to Settings/Passwords on your phone.

From purely legal perspective it is the case, and such a legal framework is standard and I am sure applicable to every application product.

indeed, this one has not been updated for two years and more over an alternative by the same developer available on AppStore to replace this one does not work either.

I would be happy to get rid of this one and buy a replacement : the main issue here is that one basically looses unexpectedly any access to his personal passwords with no feasible way to recover or transfer them to new application and all the letters and enquiries to developer to get any advise or assistance remain totally ignored!

notwithstanding the legal/formal terms it is not appropriate for AppStore to accept the situation when the application is not working, so as the alternative available for purchase, no tools are provided to back up and transfer the data to a different platform and all the attempt to get help with resolving this remain unnoticed! This is not a type of application one can easily do away with, as passwords are very difficult and time consuming to recover!

Guys, rather than pass blame, would it not be beneficial to try and locate the programmer and have him provide a quick fix? I mean we have used the app for many years and accumulated many passwords and we’ve become dependent on this. Perhaps Apple is in a position to reach out to the programmer and send the message that Users are dependent on the update. Once we get access, we can migrate to another platform

I had the same problem. I just solved it. This may help but you need to do this on a device which is not updated to the newest IOS.

I went the the settings and backed up the passwords to Dropbox (not sure if it's the same for iCloud etc).

Then I went to a device which wasn't updated and reinstalled the passcodes app. I went into the settings and went to "restore purchase" and downloaded the file from Dropbox. All my password were restored.

now I'll be moving everything to another app (probably Dropbox version)

hope this works for you.

The developer owns the intellectual property that is their app. Apple cannot do anything to modify that.

Like it or not, independent developers or companies are just that, independent. They own their IP and their product and they are solely responsible for it. And if the go out of business or walk away from their app and their customers, there is nothing anyone or any other company can do about that.

Apple is merely the vendor of third party apps. They vet them fir some minimal requirements in terms of safety and privacy and such, but that’s it. But they are not at all responsible for any other companies product or support for the product.

Estill Hill is still selling products in the App Store. You need to contact them for any assistance with one of their products. According to listings in the App Store, they have a hotmail account for email contact. Note though that none of their apps have been updated in 2 years or 4 years, so it looks like they are simply out of business.

There are companies that have been offering such apps for many years, or even decades now. Apps like 1Password and mSecure have been around a long time. And they’re not one person development efforts or one person companies.

I’ve used mSecure for at least the last 8 years or so. Their current app offers and option to generate an encrypted backup file for safe keeping. Plus it sync’s data via iCloud between my iPhone, iPad and Mac so it’s never just in one place, and also not stored just in the App itself.

It’s the small (one app) developers that I steer clear of for things like a password manager. They are more likely to go out of business or just move on in their career and lives and drop their app.
