First I suggest that you completely remove any "cleaner" apps, like Clean My Mac" from your notebook. These apps tend to cause more issues, than resolve them, and are completely unnecessary
Then run an EtreCheck report, and optionally, post it here if you need assistance with interpreting the results.

It should be possible to upgrade the memory, but we would need to know the exact model of this notebook. To get it, click on the Apple logo in the upper left-hand side of the macOS menubar. Then select About This Mac.
Alternatively, and in the mean time, run either a single or just a few apps at a time to prevent the memory "overload."
Not exactly what was meant by post your results, at least you could have rotated the photo before posting it.
You appear to have a MacBook Pro instead of a MacBook. In which case you should consider upgrading your RAM from 4 GBs to at least 8-16 GBs.
4 GBs is not enough for realistic performance.
The report that you provided, page 5, identifies your Mac as a MacBook Pro. The 1st page of the same report should identify the exact model of your MacBook Pro.

Sorry Larry about the photo but I am 75 years old and I am not a Techno wiz or I wouldn’t be asking for help.
I take it that we can update the memory from what you said. My husbands device is a MacBook not a MacBook Pro as far as I know. It is from 2012 so a little old by today’s standards.

Thank you so much and apologise to Lanny for spelling his name incorrectly. Shows how bad my eyes are. We replaced our MacBook in 2012 with Apple when it was damaged so I guess they gave me a 2010 new one then.
I am having trouble turning the device back on because of the problems. I think we have decided to get a new one when feasible but thank you so much for your help, kindness and patience. I felt less comfortable talking to Lanny but I have to remember you are all volunteers.

As Lanny has identified from the report, the issue is directly related to the limited amount of RAM that your notebook has. Notice the "Swapped Used" item? It should be zero, or very close to zero. Instead, as you can see, it read 1.51. GB. What this indicates is that the apps that you are running do not find enough RAM memory to use and have to rely on swapping out to the notebook's hard drive. This slows things down significantly.
Related to this, note the Read/Write values (93 & 85 MB/s) are relatively low, but typical for of older HDDs, compared to SSDs.
This leads to, if you want to increase the performance of this notebook, you basically have two choices:
The report you submitted says, "MacBook Pro" at the top of the page. There are no 2012 MacBooks, there are only 2006-2010 and 2015-2017 models.
Click on the Apple menu's "About This Mac," to properly identify your Mac model.
And, it's "Lanny," not "Larry."
