iOS 14 and iOS 14.0.1 Sound Issues

Ever since updating to iOS 14 and iOS 14.0.1, I’ve had sound issues with the iPhone 11 Pro. Sound volume is extremely low for calls on speakerphone, watching YouTube videos, and listening to music.

Has anyone else experienced these issues?

iPhone 6, iOS 12

The Apple rep first had me plug my phone into a pc then update my iTunes software then press the volume up button release then press the volume down button release. Then press the power button and hold it down until the phone rebooted to the Apple.

then I went on iTunes it should have a message pop up that says downloading I’m not sure what but it took about 25-30 minutes it looks like it’s just sitting there but if it says downloading your good. Once completed it asked you to pick a date to restore to I went back to before the update. Once it finished I setup my phone up like new but all my info came back and the sound is working weird thing is the software is the update. Good luck

I have a slightly different issue, probably because I usually (before the update) have most notifications delivered silently. For example before the update, I just heard phone rings and text messages unless I looked at my screen. In silent mode, only the alarms got through. After the update, even in silent mode, I get sounds from some apps. Silent mode seems to silence my alarms and make no difference to settings for other apps. Do we have a solution yet? The posts marked helpful seem more like upvotes for agreement than actual help. Did someone mention a beta update?

I think it’s a logical assumption that the update had an effect. It’s something which we know has altered the phone, etc. However, it is not the cause of the issue.

Thinking about it, how often do we use our phones to make calls with the speaker? It’s rare I do, and only noticed it after updating.

Usually all my calls are done via whatsapp video.

Its possible that there is more than one issue at play.

The blutack method seemed to have worked, on an XS max and a 6s+.

Prior to trying the blutack I turned off ‘Phone Noise Cancellation’ and quit and restarted the phone app. Having since turned this back on, it has not altered the phone speaker volume.

The ‘phone noise cancellation’ option states:

Noise cancellation reduces ambient noise on phone calls when you are holding the receiver to your ear’

So that is a system which directly affects the receiver speaker.

Could be worth toggling this.

Before the update 14.2, my temporarily fix are all previous suggestions in this post + I set silent mode off and increase the sound volume of all setting (ringer and alert awa the media volume is at least 2/3 maximum level, I found that the issue improve by 70%. Now after my update of 14.2, all call to me via earspeaker come with normal volume as before Ios 14!

I have faced a slightly different issue, but after reading the thread it seems that all are related. For me, my media and ringer volume gets synced (increasing or decreasing one leads to change in other). Changing ringer volume from settings also have no effect on ringer sound, but if I increases media volume from control centre or using volume keys ringer volume also changes. Sometimes, when playing media in car volume becomes extremely low and gets back up once you receive a call.

For me, the issue gets fixed once I disabled the "Sound Recognition" feature which was recently added in iOS 14.

Hope this helps! Please confirm if this works for you too.

Has anyone noticed that on the iPhone XS that the earpiece speaker is no longer used to play music and audio to create a stereo effect? It used to be used when I was on iOS 13 and would have beautiful output for Netflix and Apple Music. I’m pretty sure if Apple hasn’t fixed it yet that this will be a long term problem for most of us. I’ve had to put almost all of my calls on speaker just so I can have an easier time hearing people

Yes! That happen to my iPhone XS Max. And I still can’t hear **** from people who call me.

What is more amazing is that I also own an iPhone 8 that received the firmware upgrade without any problems. Also my wife’s 5S works correctly with iOS14. Anyway, they killed my XS Max and do nothing to address the issue. And don’t tell me I have to clean anything. One minute the phone was working perfectly and 30 minutes later it was unusable.

Save your trip and your aggravation to go to the store to the Genius Bar. It is definitely a problem with the update. I have a brand new phone right out of a box and it's doing it with the brand new phone. Right after the update was applied. Apple is aware of this, attorneys are aware of this, and if this message gets deleted then I know they're hiding something. It's not gonna work, as there is a problem with the update.

So went to Apple store and explained the situation and also my thoughts that it was IOS related. Due to COVID restrictions had to leave the phone and let them work on it.

Went back an hour later and guy said they ran the diagnostics, performed the fix they thought would fix it and it had not, no surprise there.

He then went on to say that they where going to replace the screen under warranty explaining that the ear receiver and screen are all joined so to replace the ear receiver they have to replace the screen. As this was under warranty I told them to go ahead.

Half an hour later phone back and problem resolved, for now. Only time will tell if this is a permanent fix!
