External display - AORUS AD27QD - 1440p with 144hz not working after Catalina update

After upgrading to Catalina on my macbook pro, I suddenly discovered the display turns black when trying to go full 144hz 1440p on my external AORUS monitor. Seems the display is still recognized in the settings so I tried adjusting it and was only able to achieve 120hz maximum refresh rate at 1440p through the display settings. Any way to fix this? I tried the PRAM reset and even done safe mode. It was working fine on Mojave. I have it connected via DisplayPort on the monitor going through a usbc/thunderbolt adapter into the macbook pro (no change before and after Cataline upgrade). I also tried through my caldigit with no luck either. Bootcamp Windows works flawlessly at 1440p 144hz still. Very frustrating that Apple decides to take one step back in their technology with every update 😖
