To back up my MacBook Pro, apple states that an external HD should be used. Any suggestions as to amount of storage to get, and any brand recommended?

I prefer the Mercury Elite Pro drives from OWC (macsales.com); good quality enclosures and they come in many flavors: go for either an SSD or a 7200 rpm spinning drive (stay away from the 5400 rpm drives, they are just too slow):
As for the size:
for a bootable clone, you only need about the same size as your internal drive. If you want to use Time Machine, it is recommended that you use a drive 2 - 2.5 times the size of your internal.

Literally any external drive will work.
Get as many cheap ones as you can. Its capacity should be considerably greater than the amount of data you need to back up. Speed is utterly unimportant to TM. Simplicity and redundancy are important.
Any name brand will work. I would opt for the SSD rather than a rotating drive for speed and reliability.
1TB Storage Capacity should work well. 2TB would be even better. I like Western Digital drives however these days just about any known brand will work just as well.
