iCloud storage downgrade: what happens to the files?

I currently have a 200GB storage iCloud subscription which I intend to cancel. I haven't used an iPhone since mid 2018 so I don't see why I should keep the subscription going. My question is: what would happen to the files that are stored in iCloud which already passed the limit of the downgraded plan?
