Unable to install macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Update

Software Update prompts me that an update is available for my Mac. Specifically, the 10.15.7 update and tells me a restart is required. I restart my computer it is a black screen for quite some time... the apple logo pops up for like 2 seconds with a progress bar, but nothing actually gets installed because it goes through the entire restart and when I log in to my computer, the Software Update prompt still tells me I need to restart my computer for the update. Seems like it is stuck/broken and I'm not sure how to fix it. Is there a command I can run in terminal to reset the broken Software Update window in System Preferences? This is like Windows Update level of bad.

Hello everyone! I managed to get the update installed! This is what I did. I went to the Apple Support Downloads page and downloaded the .dmg file for the update. Sometimes Apple's auto update thing breaks so this is a good way around that. Apple - Support - Downloads

Here is the specific link to the download as well: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2052?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Enjoy!

Thanks Micus 1 but I have made the decision to downgrade back to Mojave. My Mac Mini has reached its plateau with Catalina ...Big Sur is a no go. Based on that, I have no desire to remain with Catalina ...probably one of the worst OS "upgrades" Apple has come out with. The remaining Catalina bugs/glitches will probably be addressed with Big Sur so to remain in Catalina means living with this crappy OS. I shouldn't have to go through all manner of gyrations to upload a simple security update and I shouldn't have to deal with a poorly designed and executed OS; this is *exactly* why I moved from Microsoft to Apple. But Steve Jobs legacy has fallen on people and a CEO who do not embrace Jobs' perfectionist, gotta be right before it's released, mindset; IMHO there's not much to distinguish Apple over Microsoft these days ...a shame. Both my Mac and me were happy with Mojave so I will be doing the downgrade.

I just ran into that issue, too! I downloaded the 10.15.7 dmg and it gave the same results as the normal update through System Preferences did--computer would restart, show the Apple and progress bar, and then show the login screen. After I would enter the user account password, the computer would log me in and nothing would happen. This may sound strange, but I finally got it to go after I temporarily turned on Automatic Login for that user account in the User's & Groups pane of System Preferences.

I realize you don't need the help anymore, Ferenc, but hopefully this can help others out yet.

You've got what I was experiencing. I tried everything. Wasted far too much time. The last thing I did was to restart in "Safe Mode" and install using the direct download dmg file. If I'm not mistaken it finally worked and installed ...although the process left me doubting it's installation. After rebooting, the security update notification was gone. If you haven't yet tried, I would do the Safe Mode install with a direct download.

I had made the decision to downgrade back to Mojave even before I finally managed to coax the Catalina security update to install. Mojave worked (and works) great; I got my 32 bit programs back (not every software maker is kowtowing to Apple and their exclusive support for 64 bit software) and so far, updates install painlessly like they used to. My Mini had met it's plateau with Catalina; Big Sur was a no-go and I didn't want to get stuck with Catalina.

Hope you get it figured out.

Cheers.
