Can't install macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Supplemental Update

Hello

I have difficulties installing the new update on my macbook. Then I push the button 'Update Now' on the pop-up window it requires to restart the laptop. The troubles starts from this step. It restarts and after that I see the apple logo on the black screen and at some point it shows a crossed circle. Nothing happens any more. Then I make again a full restart and hurray it starts installing the update. When installation is finished the laptop restarts and then as it normally happens, a screen asks to type my apple-id and password to log into the system. the problem is that it doesn't download anymore. After I press 'Enter' or arrow icon to log in it gets stuck showing only my name on the screen.

I had to make the internet recovery to install macOS again. I am choosing to install the latest compatible version and after it's installed I again have the notification that a supplemental update is available. Could it be possible that the mac doesn't support this update?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Hey there!

Sorry for the troubles, If you’ve already tried installing the OS via Command R as said above, I’d first try running First Aid on the startup volume from recovery mode:

https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/repair-a-storage-device-dskutl1040/mac

Restart normally and see how it goes.

If that fails, I’d next try starting in safe mode:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac

If it allows you to login, restart and test again, if not, you may need to start again to safe mode to remove third party software that’s conflicting with the Mac OS.

Other options would be to:

If you haven’t yet, do firmware resets and try again:

SMC Reset:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

PRAM/NVRAM Reset:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

It may also be possible to set up a new user from recovery mode, however, if you can’t even get to the login screen, that probably won’t work.

Its totally possible that the drive needs to be reset to factory settings to fix it, which is fairly easy to do, however, if you do NOT have a backup of your data, there are a few extra steps to take for that, but is possible.

Hopefully it won’t even come to that though, just let me know how it goes, good luck!
