How can I erase my macbook

I am told to hold command and R while MacBook is coming on and will go to recovery mode. Nothing happens. I think it is from 2012.

Do you still have a running macOS on your Mac? What version? Check Apple Menu > About This Mac for info.

If yes, create a bootable USB stick with this https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

Then turn your Mac on and hold Option key, choose the UBS installer and proceed.

Before formatting

Reset SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Reset NVRAM https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Here's how to reinstall macOS on your Mac https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

You can jump step 1 once you're already in Recovery Mode after booting from USB installer.

Make sure to backup your personal data to an external HD.
