My iPhone X (purchases in December 2017) loses charge very quickly once it reaches 20% and in general does not hold a charge nearly as well as it did when the device was new. Is this likely a battery issue? Should I have the battery replaced as a first step?

Settings>Battery>Battery Health. If it's at 80% or lower, the battery definitely needs to be replaced.
