Can I use an iMac as a second monitor?

I have a MacBook Pro (2017) which is my main computer for work. I've been offered a 27' iMac, and would like to use it as an extension to my laptop. Is there a way to tie the two together other than using target disk mode?

You need the following to use Target Display Mode:

  • A Mac notebook or desktop with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port. If your Mac has Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, you can connect it using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.
  • A Thunderbolt cable or a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable
  • A supported iMac with OS X v10.6.1 or later

See the list below for iMac models that support Target Display Mode, the type of cable you need to connect that model of iMac, and the kind of port you need on your other Mac.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can’t be used as Target Display Mode displays.

Yes.

You can use remote control access, or Screen Sharing, so that you can use the larger 27" iMac to connect to the MacBook. This is not the same as a monitor extension, this uses a network connection, either WiFi or Ethernet, so it can be a little laggy. You can open a remote control connection window to the MacBook from the iMac using this method.

Depends on the kind of work you are doing if it is acceptable or not. You don't need any additional software, this is built-in to the macOS. There are third party VNC server/client apps so that you can do this from Mac to PC as well. System administrators and help desks use this method to work on computers remotely.
