Using Guided Access - unable to do this on iPad5 mini

I have new ipad5 mini. Enabled Guided Access. Opened the app I want to lock down. Next step is triple click the home key. Nope. Triple click home key does not work. It just shows thumbnails of open apps. No matter how fast I click. Suggestions are appreciated !
